What is Martin Fourcade doing now? Biography of Martin Fourcade, biathlete: personal life, photo. Roots of the Fourcade family

Thanks to the beautiful Sveta, we have a translation of an article about the origins of the Fourcade family. Enjoy!

Roots of the Fourcade family

What will the hitherto unexplored family tree of our Olympic champion reveal to us?

We find its roots in southern France, in Catalonia, where the brothers Fourcade, Martin and Simon, born in Céret, grew up and took their first steps on skis. Their father Marcel was the mayor of the Pyrenean village of Llagon, in the Eastern Pyrenees, near the Spanish border. The highest point of this area is located at an altitude of 2,196 m.

Looking deeper into the pedigree of the Fourcade family, we find nothing that could incline him to take up skiing. And in fact, the landscapes of our ancestors reveal neither peaks nor snow... On the contrary, these are plains, drenched in the sun and covered with vineyards. For two centuries, the Fourcades were unable to descend more than 150 meters, from 180 to 20 m, as a result of slow migration.

180 meters is the height of the village where they come from: Vantenac-Cabardes, near Carcassonne. Their oldest known ancestor settled in this village in 1680. Jean-Louis Fourcade was born around 1650 and may have come from an area further east. Having established themselves well in Wantenac, his descendants settled there for quite a long time, like classic “masters,” marrying girls from neighboring villages. From about 1830, they began to cultivate the land, as well as the Lavalette vineyards, where they would later become managers of large wineries.

The "Great Migration" will take place during the time of Jean Fourcade, born in 1840. He became a "business agent" and then managed the large estate of Lesagna before leaving Aude with his wife Marguerite Berger (from a blacksmith family from the area around Montpellier).

The couple settled in 1870 in Roussillon, near Perpignan and the sea, in the community of Montesco. This is where Jean would be elected mayor several times, and this is where the family really takes its roots. It is safe to say that if Vantenac is their genealogical cradle, then Montesco is undoubtedly their emotional cradle. It is there that the family has its own plot in the cemetery, where the graves of members of this family are still preserved, where Jean, the former mayor, and another Jean, his son, the owner of a lemonade factory, who died in 1910, are buried. He served in Algeria in a cavalry regiment - very far from his descendants, the “Alpine shooters”...

Most of the champion's roots are concentrated in and around Montesco, but some of his ancestors came from Spanish Catalonia in the late 17th century. In his family tree there is a branch of Anglades, butchers from Argeles, and many others. Some of them come from Estaire, others from Aiglet or Prat de Moyo (2,693 meters), and nearby is Llagon, where the champion will grow up...

Going back through the family tree, we see many branches, such as Bocaille and Ribel, as well as the humble herdsman of the Prat de Moillot, Pierre Tubert (born around 1760)... As we see, the Fourcade family is connected by family ties not only with the Fourcade (paternal) and Vila (maternal) branches, but also with many families of the area, and they also influenced the fate of our new national star.

In March 2008, in the capital of Norway, Oslo, Martin Fourcade took 61st place at the Biathlon World Cup.

The next sports season for Martin was more successful. At the World Cup in Hochfilzin, Martin Fourcade took 36th place in the individual race and 10th place in the sprint race. Martin Fourcade finished the 2009 sports season number 24 in the overall World Cup standings, and in every race this season he invariably placed in the top twenty.

Thanks to two pursuit victories Martin Fourcade won the 2009-2010 sports season in the pursuit program in the biathlon world cup. He beat Austrian biathlete Simon Eder by a point. In the overall standings, Martin Fourcade took 5th place, and his brother Simon took seventh.

In the city of Ruhpolding, Martin Fourcade won silver medals in each of the three races, and in Fort Kent and Antholz, Martin Fourcade won the mass start. In the mixed relay, Martin Fourcade took third place, showing excellent shooting quality and good speed on the track. In the sprint race, Martin Fourcade won silver, although he missed twice - his speed compensated for his mistakes in shooting at the line. In the Swedish city of Östersund, Martin Fourcade took first place in the pursuit and individual race. This allowed Martin to wear the yellow jersey of the world biathlon leader.

Fourcade Martin is one of the best French biathletes. Champion of the 2014 Olympic Games. Martin is the younger brother of the equally gifted biathlete Simon Fourcade.

Carier start

Initially, the parents sent the two brothers to the hockey section, but since it was far from home, they were not always able to take the children there. Therefore, Simon and Martin were transferred to the section. Over time, the brothers got tired of just running, and they “threw their rifles over their backs.”

Martin Fourcade (see photo below) came to the sport very successfully. The beginning of his activities coincided with the end of the career of Raphael Poiret, the legendary biathlete, who decided to leave skiing and take up coaching. In many of his interviews, Martin stated that Poiret is his idol.

During the first two years, Fourcade did not stand out as anything special. He always managed to get into the scoring zone, but there were no victories or medals. It’s not for nothing that they say that biathlon is considered an “adult” sport. The achievements of the Norwegian Bjoerndalen at the last Olympics only confirm this.

Season 2009-2010

Fourcade Martin became famous in 2010 when he won silver in the mass start at the Olympic Games. After that, he won three World Cup competitions. Once in Kontiolahti and twice in Oslo. This allowed him to take fifth place in the overall standings. His brother became the seventh.

Season 2010-2011

It was a successful season for Fourcade. He started with three top-5 finishes in Östersund. Then he took 2nd place in Ruhpolding in all three races. And winning the mass start in Fort Kent and Antholz allowed him to arrive at the World Championships as a clear favorite.

Thanks to Martin's high speed and accuracy, the French team took 3rd place in the mixed relay. Fourcade himself got gold in the sprint and gold in the pursuit (despite three misses). At the end of the season, the biathlete took 3rd place in the overall World Cup standings.

Season 2011-2012

Before the start of the season, Fourcade Martin set himself a clear goal - to take 1st or 2nd place in the standings. He began to implement this task immediately, at the first stage, winning the pursuit and individual race. Even before the end of the season, it became clear that the athlete would take 1st place in the overall World Cup standings. In addition, Marten received Small Crystal Globes in the pursuit and sprint.

Season 2012-2013

It was opened by the victory of the Frenchman in the Swedish Östersund (individual race). In the sprint, everything was not so successful - only 10th place. But then Fourcade was able to win the pursuit race. Subsequent stages were not very successful: the Frenchman did not take first places. The reason for this was the shoulder injury he received in Oberhof.

Svendsen's absence during the pre-Olympic week in Sochi allowed Marten to win two of the two races held. In the 20-kilometer individual competition, Fourcade missed only once, eliminating the 60-second gap from the leader, Binbacher. As a result, Martin's advantage at the finish was 7 seconds. In the 10-kilometer sprint competition, the Frenchman did not make a single mistake and confidently took first place, beating the silver medalist by 40 seconds.

The last stage of the World Cup, held in Khanty-Mansiysk, became triumphant for the Frenchman. Fourcade won the sprint race without making a single mistake. He was unable to achieve similar success in pursuit. Martin missed at every turn, making 5 mistakes.

Despite a number of failures, at the end of 2013, Fourcade still overtook his main rival Svendsen by 421 points, thereby breaking the record for the number of points scored in a season. The biathlete also won Crystal Globes in all types of races.

2014 Olympics

On February 8, Martin Fourcade, whose photo is attached to the article, took part in the sprint race. Unfortunately, he missed in the prone position. As a result, the athlete had to settle for 5th place.

On February 10, he took part in the pursuit race, where he had no equal. The biathlete missed only once. In addition, Martin Fourcade's technique was impeccable. It's no surprise that he came first.

On February 13, Martin competed in the individual race at the Laura complex. And again the athlete has one miss and a second gold. The 2nd place was then taken by the German Erich Lesser, and the 3rd place by the Russian Evgeniy Garanichev.

All biathlon fans were expecting a fierce fight between Svendsen and Fourcade. And it took place on February 18 at the mass start. The duel was very exciting. The judges had to view the photo finish to determine the winner. This was Swensen's 4th Olympic victory.

The 4x7.5 km relay completed the Olympic biathlon. Martin Fourcade, although he ran at the last stage, could not help the French team in any way. As a result, she did not make it to the podium.

Character and views

  • Marten's main advantage is reliability, and his main disadvantage is egocentrism. He is trying in every possible way to eradicate it.
  • What he fears most in life is the death of loved ones.
  • The most necessary item for a biathlete is a telephone.
  • Doesn't like gifts.
  • Wants to change his hair.
  • Has only one true friend.
  • Happiness for him is doing what he loves and being with loved ones more often.

When asked by journalists what he will do after finishing his career, Fourcade Martin usually answers that it is too early to think about it. But, most likely, he will either remain in the sport, or will “live in a beautiful castle with a princess happily ever after, and, of course, have many children with her.”

In general terms, this is his entire biography. Martin Fourcade is currently one of the most famous and popular biathletes in the world.

The biography of Martin Fourcade is the life story of one of the most successful biathletes of our time. He is a five-time Olympic champion, who set an absolute record for this indicator among all athletes who participated in both the Winter and Summer Olympics. He was world champion 11 times and won the overall World Cup 7 times. Having started winning World Cups in 2012, he still does not give up his championship to anyone.

Childhood and youth

The biography of Martin Fourcade must begin from the time of his birth. He was born in 1988 in the small French town of Céret. In the biography of Martin Fourcade, nationality is of interest to many of his fans, because he does not look like a Frenchman at all. And indeed, he is Catalan, as he himself spoke about in an interview in 2015. The city in which he was born is only 200 kilometers from Catalonia, so there are many people from this Spanish region.

In the biography of Martin Fourcade, parents played a big role, especially his father. In the past, he was a swimming coach and began to instill in his sons a love of sports from childhood. Martin's older brother, Simon, is also a biathlete and multiple world champion. The youngest brother, Bris, works as an instructor at a ski resort. The mother of the hero of this article is a speech therapist by profession.

First victories

The first victory in the biography of Martin Fourcade took place in 2010 at the Winter Olympic Games, which took place in Vancouver, Canada. At that time, the hero of this article was still a very young, little-known athlete.

At that Olympics, the most successful thing for him was the mass start. After the fourth firing line, the leaders were Slovakian Gurait and Russian Ustyugov, who passed all the stages without mistakes. They were followed 15 seconds away by the Austrian Suman, who made one mistake, and another 10 seconds away by Fourcade, who by that time had already missed three times. Martin's final lap was outstanding as Fourcade passed both Zuman and Guraite to take the silver medal. The victory went to Ustyugov.

World Cup triumph

Martin Fourcade's biography already has outstanding achievements. He became the first biathlete in history to win seven World Cups in a row. It all started in 2012. Throughout the season, Fourcade won eight races, was second three times and finished third three more times. In the fight for victory in the overall classification, he was opposed by the Norwegian Emil Hegle Svendsen, but Fourcade won three of the last four races, winning the first World Cup in his career.

The biography of biathlete Martin Fourcade is admirable. In 2013, he beat Svendsen again, but this time by 421 points instead of 65. In 2014, the situation at the top of the biathlon Olympus remained: Fourcade was first, Svendsen was second.

In 2015, Russian Anton Shipulin took second place, losing to the hero of this article by 64 points. In 2016, another Norwegian, Johannes Boe, became second, but Fourcade remained consistently first. He showed a record result for himself in the 2016/2017 season, scoring 1322 points. Fourcade won 14 victories at the World Cup, was second three times, and third five times. He missed out on a top-three finish in just four races all season. His worst result was 8th place in the sprint in Oberhof, Germany.

In the 2017/2018 season, Fourcade won for the seventh time in a row, beating Be by 89 points.

Olympics in Sochi

Fourcade was recognized as a great athlete after the Sochi Olympics in 2014. Although the sprint race did not work out for him. He made one mistake and finished sixth. But in the pursuit race, he quickly made up the 12-second gap from the Norwegian Bjoerndalen, winning the first Olympic gold medal in his career.

In the 20-kilometer individual race, Fourcade's shooting failed again at the second shooting range, but even this penalty minute did not prevent him from winning for the second time in a row. He beat the German Lesser, who had not made a single mistake, by 12 seconds.

The mass start was dramatic for Martin. He missed already at the first line, then he shot without mistakes, trying to catch up with his eternal rival Svendsen, who closed all 20 targets. He succeeded in the last meters of the distance, but the photo finish gave the gold to the Norwegian, and Marten was left with silver.

Fourcade ran fourth in the relay. He missed twice on prone and was unable to improve his team’s already poor position (8th place in the end).

Olympics in Pyeongchang

It seemed that the Frenchman would not be able to perform better at the Olympics in South Korea, but he succeeded.

At first, everything turned out worse than ever. In the sprint, Martin missed three times when shooting prone, finishing eighth. True, the gap from the leader was not critical - only 22 seconds. In the pursuit race, the biathlete demonstrated his best qualities. Starting with a standard miss already at the very first shooting range, he went through the rest without errors, winning the third Olympic gold medal in his career.

In the individual race, Fourcade was one of the main contenders for another victory, but he made two mistakes at the last turn and finished only in 5th place.

In the mass start, last year's story was almost completely repeated: the winner was determined using a photo finish. This time, Fourcade and the Austrian Simon Schemp demonstrated the same time. This time the centimeters were on the Frenchman's side.

Martin won his fifth gold medal in the mixed relay. The French girls took the lead from the first laps. Fourcade ran last, managing to guarantee his national team victory.
