Physics is an interesting and fascinating science. How many unusual phenomena can be explained with its help. Usually, research into complex phenomena is carried out by scientists, professors, in short, people with higher education. But the Tournament of Young Physicists (hereinafter referred to as TUF) is an opportunity for high school students and others to feel like real scientists and researchers.


Still, what is a tournament of young physicists?

Tournament of young physicists- one of the leading international team competitions for high school students in the ability to solve complex research problems, convincingly present their solutions, and defend them in scientific discussions.
Alas, this definition does not reveal the entire tournament. Therefore, in this article I will try to talk about TYUF in full. I would like to clarify right away that there are many types of tournaments, which do not differ much from each other. But this article will talk about the Siberian and All-Russian tournaments (since I only participated in them).

Publishing tasks

It all starts with the publication of seventeen problems on the website of the international tournament of young physicists in the middle of summer. Next, translations of the problems are posted on the website of the All-Russian tournament, as well as a reference kit.

It is worth noting that the tasks are research, that is, they require a lot of experiments and experiments, physical justification, both qualitative and quantitative.

Sample task

A rope ladder consists of wooden rungs inclined alternately in opposite directions. Hang it vertically and then release it. When such a ladder falls on a horizontal surface, its upper end moves down faster than it does during free fall. Explain this phenomenon and explore how it depends on suitable parameters.



Observation of a phenomenon

At the beginning of September, ten of the seventeen problems for the Siberian tournament are published, which takes place two months before the All-Russian one, namely in early February. Next, the teams begin to prepare for the tournament.

Preparation for the tournament

At this point I will tell you how my team is preparing. First, we all read together and superficially analyze the terms of the tasks, then everyone chooses a task for themselves (we have such an attitude that everyone solves their own problem, of course we consult with each other, but with such an attitude it will not be possible to shift responsibility for our task to anyone) . Next we look for a theory and make the first observations.

Density visualization
Schlieren photography is often used to visualize changes in density in a gas. Build a schlieren photography setup and investigate how well it can resolve differences in density.


Electric honeycomb

Pour some oil onto a horizontal metal plate and place a vertical metal needle over it. When high voltage is applied between the needle and the plate, a cellular structure appears on the surface of the oil. Explain and investigate this phenomenon.


Azimuthally-radial pendulum

Attach one end of the horizontal elastic rod to a rigid tripod. Fix the other end of the rod on the stretched thread to avoid vertical deflection, and hang the weight on another thread. In the resulting pendulum, radial vibrations (parallel to the rod) can spontaneously turn into azimuthal (perpendicular to the rod) and vice versa. Explore this phenomenon.


After observing phenomena, we put forward hypotheses, confirm or refute them with experiments and experiments. Then we find quantitative dependencies and derive a mathematical model; if the physics of the problem is complex, then we make a quantitative assessment.


It should be emphasized that mathematical calculations not supported by physics are, to put it mildly, bad form at a tournament.

In general, a good report should contain the following points:

  • the phenomenon referred to in the problem statement has been reproduced experimentally;
  • a plausible qualitative explanation is proposed;
  • a theoretical model of the phenomenon is presented that makes it possible to predict some quantitative dependencies;
  • these quantitative dependencies were measured experimentally;
  • The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions.
It is also very important to structure the report correctly, because what you have done in five months needs to be told in 10 minutes, so that you are understood. Therefore, you also need to devote a lot of time to writing a speech and rehearsing, although this is not always possible. Usually in the last days everyone finishes the experiments and includes them in the presentation of the report.

Physical Combat Structure

Each physical battle can be divided into three rounds, in each of which the teams switch roles. By the way, about roles. After drawing lots, the teams assign the roles of speaker, opponent and reviewer. If the role of the presenter is clear, then what do the opponent and the reviewer do.
The opponent asks the Speaker clarifying questions, after which he presents his summary of the report. He reviews the solution to the problem presented by the Speaker, analyzes its achievements and shortcomings, and formulates questions for discussion. The discussion discusses the solution presented by the Speaker and the basic physics of the problem. The Opponent's speech should not turn into a presentation of his own decision.
The reviewer gives a brief assessment of the speeches of the Speaker and the Opponent,
including the discussion that took place between them. (At the All-Russian tournament, the Reviewer participates in the general discussion and can ask questions to both the speaker and the opponent)


Discussion

Discussion is an integral part of the tournament, since it involves a direct dialogue between the tournament participants, in which the physics of the phenomenon is discussed. The task of the discussion is to bring different points of view on a phenomenon into one true one, but this does not always work out that way. There are such tournament participants who do not want to listen to another point of view in any way, do not even want to discuss it, but persistently impose their own, without explaining why their decision is correct. Therefore, if you consider someone else’s vision of the physical processes of a problem to be incorrect, then justify why this is so, referring to physical laws. And try together with your discussion buddy to find the right solution. It should be noted that discussion in question-and-answer form is highly undesirable. The discussion should be reasoning, not short questions and answers.

International Tournament of Young Physicists

At the end of the all-Russian tournament, a national team is created for the international TYUF. It is worth noting the complexity of the international tournament. It lies, first of all, in the fact that all reports, discussions and debates are conducted in English, and this directly affects the teams’ assessments.

The Siberian Tournament of Young Physicists is held by the SibTUF Social Movement. Organizational and financial support for the tournament is provided by the Ministry of Education of the Novosibirsk Region, the Regional Center for the Development of Creativity of Children and Youth, the Foundation for Support of Educational Projects, Novosibirsk State University, and the Scientific Research Center of NSU.

The Tournament of Young Physicists (TUF) is a team competition of high school students in the ability to solve complex research problems, convincingly present the solutions obtained, and defend them in a scientific discussion. In the summer, after the end of the International Tournament of Young Physicists (IYPT), next year's IYPT problems are presented - 17 problems. Members of the methodological commission of the Social Movement of SibTUF translate the problems into Russian and from them, by voting of members of the Social Movement, 10 problems are selected for the Siberian Open Tournament of Young Physicists. The objectives of TYUF are of an open research nature. Working on a problem involves familiarizing yourself with additional literature on the topic of the problem and performing a number of full-scale and computer experiments. Therefore, the tasks are communicated to the teams in advance, at the beginning of the school year, so that the teams can understand the tasks and prepare well for TUF.

This year, 23 teams (128 participants) took part in the Tournament: 15 teams from Novosibirsk and the Novosibirsk region (Krasnoobsk, Berdsk, Talmenka, Lebedevka, Kuibyshev, Barabinsk) and 8 teams from other regions - Kemerovo region (Novokuznetsk and Mezhdurechensk), the Republic of Sakha (Mirny), Sverdlovsk region (Ekaterinburg and Rezh), Voronezh region (Voronezh)

Each team prepared for the tournament for several months. To prepare teams for the tournament, several years ago laboratory sites were created in different schools, equipped with everything necessary for conducting scientific experiments. Similar testing grounds were equipped at the Scientific Research Center of Novosibirsk State University, MBOU Lyceum No. 113 (Novosibirsk), MBOU IL NSTU (Novosibirsk), Orthodox Gymnasium in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh (Novosibirsk), MAOU Lyceum No. 6 (Berdsk) , MBOU Secondary School No. 93 (Barabinsk), MAOU OC “Ermine”, in the Iskitimsky district.

The tournament took place in the academic building of NSU and lasted four days. On the first day, according to tradition, as in previous years, in the auditorium named after. G.I. Budkera (BFA) the opening of the Tournament and the draw took place, which determined who the teams would have to meet at the Tournament. In the afternoon, on January 31, the first qualifying fight took place, on February 1, the second and third, and on January 2, the last, fourth, qualifying fight. This year, as in the past, for the qualifying battle the teams were asked to choose a problem for the report - the best of the remaining problems (not yet discussed in previous battles) of the problem. The battles took place in parallel in 7 classrooms - 5 3-team and two 4-team. Each audience had a very representative jury - 5-6 people, which made the judging more objective. These are employees of institutes, representatives of companies, graduate students, students of the NSU Faculty of Physics, team leaders who already have refereeing experience and have gone through seminars with TUF coaches. The following teams made it to the finals: “EngineNETIk-1” (MBOU “Engineering Lyceum NSTU”, Novosibirsk, “Demons of Physics”, MAOU Lyceum No. 130, Yekaterinburg, “Izolenta”, national team of Voronezh). These teams became the winners of the Tournament, and in the final the absolute winners were to be determined. The final took place on February 3 in the auditorium named after. G.I. Budkera (BFA). As a result of intense competition, the absolute winner was determined: the InzheNETIk-1 team.

After the final, while the teams were resting, a meeting was held between the team coaches and other members of the SibTUF Social Movement, at which a report was heard from the President of the movement, M. Yu. Solodovnikov. about the activities of the Movement over the past year and plans for the next year. After the meeting in the auditorium. G.I. Budker (BFA) on the afternoon of February 3, all teams and spectators gathered again and the ceremonial closing of the Tournament took place. The welcoming speech was given by: Rector of Novosibirsk State University, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Mikhail Petrovich Fedoruk, Director of the Scientific Research Center of NSU, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Nikolai Ivanovich Yavorsky. All winners and prize-winners were awarded diplomas and medals, the team - the absolute winner of the Tournament received a cup with the image of Isaac Newton. The portrait was made using the “Optical anamorphing” method (deliberate change of the image using an optical method), the application technology is laser engraving.

From February 1 to 4, NSU hosted the Siberian Open Tournament of Young Physicists, which is organized by the SibTUF Social Movement. In the 2011–2012 season, the Tournament was held for the first time according to the tasks and regulations of the IYPT. The 2017 tournament is the sixth in this format. The objectives of TYUF are of an open research nature. Working on a task involves familiarizing yourself with additional literature on the topic of the task, performing a number of full-scale and computer experiments, therefore the tasks are communicated to the teams several months before the tournament. The lists of problems of various tournaments of young physicists held in the current academic year are compiled on the basis of the list of problems of the International Tournament of Young Physicists (IYPT).

This year, 26 teams took part in SibTUF: 11 - from Novosibirsk, 6 - from the Novosibirsk region, 2 - from the Kemerovo region, 4 - from the Sverdlovsk region, 1 - from the Voronezh region, 1 - from the Republic of Buryatia, 1 - national team of the city Mirny and Novosibirsk, 146 people in total. The geography of SibTUF is expanding every year: for the first time, teams from Ulan-Ude, the cities of Rezh and Verkhnyaya Pyshma of the Sverdlovsk region, and the city of Mirny took part in the event. Each team prepared for the tournament for several months. To prepare teams for the tournament, laboratory sites were created in different schools, equipped with everything necessary to conduct scientific experiments. Alexey Aleksandrovich Kolchin, screenwriter of the project, gave a lecture about the “GetAClass Films” project. At the end of the opening, a draw and a meeting of team coaches took place. On February 1, the first qualifying fight took place, on February 2 – the second and third, on January 3 – the last, fourth, qualifying fight. For the first time, to participate in the qualifying battle, the teams were asked to choose the task for the report - the best of the remaining ones (not yet covered in previous battles). The battles took place in parallel in 8 classrooms - six 3-team and two 4-team. Each audience had a representative jury of 5-6 people, which made the judging more objective. The jury included: employees of institutes, representatives of companies, graduate students, students of the NSU Faculty of Physics, team leaders who already have refereeing experience and have gone through seminars with TUF coaches. The following teams made it to the finals of the Tournament: “SUNC NSU” (SUNC NSU), “School of Pythagoras” and “Synergy” (PHO Orthodox Gymnasium in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh) - they became the winners of the Tournament. The teams themselves chose the tasks that they had to report: “SUSC NSU” - the “Fast Chain” task, “School of Pythagoras” - the “Propeller on a Stick” task, “Synergy” - the “Trsional Gyroscope” task. As a result of an exciting struggle, the absolute winner was determined - the team “SUSC NSU”. The closing ceremony of the Tournament also took place on February 4th. All winners and prize-winners were awarded diplomas and medals, the team - the absolute winner of the Tournament received a cup with the image of Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa, the famous Soviet physicist, Nobel Prize laureate in physics. At the end of the ceremony, everyone spoke with words of gratitude, as well as parting words to future Tyufovites. The tournament of young physicists is a team competition of schoolchildren to solve physical problems of a research nature. The list of 10 SibTUF tasks is published in early September, so five months are given to prepare for the tournament. During preparation, schoolchildren conduct experiments, get acquainted with literature, understand theory, prepare presentations, and learn to tell them. The tournament itself takes place in the form of physical battles, when teams alternately act as presenters, opponents and reviewers. This form of holding a tournament is close to a real scientific discussion.

The Siberian Tournament of Young Physicists is held over four days in early February in the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok.

Teams consisting of 3–6 students in grades 8–11 are invited to participate in the Tournament. The tournament is open: teams from both the Siberian Federal District and other regions of Russia and other countries participate in it.

The official language of the tournament is Russian. The current version of the rules of the Siberian Tournament of Young Physicists is published on the tournament website.

The rules of the Siberian Tournament of Young Physicists are adopted by the Public Council, which includes coaches of teams constantly participating in the tournament. Organizational and financial support for the tournament is provided by the Foundation for Support of Educational Projects, the Center for the Development of Creativity of Children and Youth of the Novosibirsk Region, and Novosibirsk State University.

The Siberian tournament is part of the IYPT tournament system. The guys first participate in their regional tournament, then in the Russian one. And the winners of RosTUF represent our country at the International Tournament of Young Physicists.
