The World Cup is still two years away. However, FIFA is preparing the so-called “seed” before the world championship - Confederations Cup 2017 of the year. This tournament will take place in Russia, in four cities.

Participants in this competition will be the strongest teams from six continents, as well as the current champion of the last world and the country in whose territory the next World Cup will be held. Russia became the host of the 2018 World Cup. Therefore, the season of “experiences” for Russian fans will begin next year.

Dates

This tournament is already the eighth in a row. The competition will begin on June 19 and will last until July 2, 2017 in Russia. The group round is scheduled for June 17-25, and the semi-finals are scheduled for June 28 and 29. The main, final match will take place on July 2. The third place match will also take place on the same day.

In addition to the dates for the Confederation Cup, the football arenas where the events will take place are also known. Firstly, this is the Zenit Arena. The stadium can accommodate almost 70,000 spectators.

The very first and final final match will be held at this complex. In addition to the arena in St. Petersburg, the list of applications includes: Moscow's Otkritie Arena, Sochi's Fisht Stadium, and Kazan's Kazan Arena.

These competitions will be excellent preparation for the upcoming World Championships. A year before the 2018 World Cup, the participating country will check how ready it is to host the most important world championship. Thus, maximum organization is needed from city officials and sports functionaries, as well as the mobility of volunteers in preparation for the World Cup.

Who will take part in the championship

Eight teams will compete for gold, silver and bronze. This list includes six continental gold medal winners, the winner of the last World Cup, and the host country of the 2018 World Cup.

Currently, seven teams have been identified that will take part in the Confederation Cup in 2017. This is the winner of the Asian Cup championship - the Australian team, the winner of the championship in South America - the Chilean team, the winner of the CONCACAF gold award last year - the Mexican team, the winner of the 2016 OFC Nations Cup - New Zealand, as well as the winner of the cup of the just completed EURO 2016 - Portugal team.

This list also includes Russia and Germany. The German squad won the last World Cup in 2014, and Russia qualified for the Confederation Cup thanks to the fact that it is hosting the 2018 World Cup on its territory.

All eight teams were divided into two groups: “A” and “B”. The Russian team ended up in basket “A”.

Predictions for the winner

This sports tournament appeared not so long ago. The forerunner of the competition was the King Fahd Cup, which was played in 92 and 95. Under the leadership of FIFA, these competitions began to take place in 1997.

The team that won a record number of victories in this championship is Brazil. The players of this team raised the coveted cup over their heads four times. France ranks second in terms of victories. They have two cups of this tournament in their trophy cabinet. Argentina, the Danes and Mexico each have one gold medal, if we take into account the King Fahd Cup.

Taking into account all the circumstances, the Conference Cup cannot be classified as an “exhibition”. Players fight for prizes not only in every second of the match, but even die, in the literal sense of the word. Such a tragedy happened in 2003. During the semi-final match between Mexico and Cameroon, a football player from the African team died.

It is still difficult to even guess who will be the winner in the future fight for the Confederation Cup in 2017. There is still a year until the start of this football festival.

Ticket prices for tournament matches

Free sale of tickets for the games of this football event will begin in the second quarter of this year. However, the opportunity to book tickets is available today. The cost of a lucky ticket to one of the most beautiful football arenas ranges from 4,000 to 15,000 rubles.

The discrepancy in price between the first category and VIP seats is already more than 10,000 rubles. By the way, these are only prices for group round matches. It’s hard to imagine how much a ticket for the most decisive, final match will cost.

Afterword

There is still a lot of time before the 2017 Conference Cup is held. The last participant in this competition has not yet been determined and the logo for the upcoming football tournament has not even been created. Specific ticket prices are also not known and most of the issues related to the organization of the 2017 Conference Cup have not been resolved. So a clear picture of what the future tournament will be like and what it will look like has not yet emerged.

Well, fans of the Russian national team should be patient. No one knows how the domestic team will perform in this cup, especially after such a serious failure at the last European Championship 2016. But, note, modest Mexico once took the prize in the Confederation Cup, so everything is in the hands of the domestic team.

No one could even think about this, but it happened. The German national team is the winner of the 2017 Confederations Cup. Everything was decided on July 2 at the St. Petersburg Arena stadium in St. Petersburg. The backups of Neuer, Muller, Götze, Reus, Gundogan, Hummels and other Bundestim stars defeated the powerful Chilean national team with Alexis Sanchez at the forefront of the attack in the final match.

Germany won the first Confederations Cup in its history thanks to a minimal victory over the Chileans. Borussia M midfielder Lars Stindl scored for the Bundesteam. It is worth noting that Antonio Pizzi's team had more possession of the ball and more shots on goal, but Löw surpassed his opponent tactically, scoring a goal at the beginning of the meeting, and began to play exclusively on counterattacks.

Nobody expected such a sensation from Lev’s team. The head coach of the Bundestim did not pull the main stars of the German team from vacation, and brought an experimental squad to Russia. The young guys, called by the head coach to defend the honor of the country at CC 2017, showed their best side. Throughout the tournament, the German team demonstrated decent football, despite the poor teamwork of the squad. Having become the winner of the Confederations Cup, Joachim Löw can safely go home and prepare for the upcoming World Cup.

The path of the German national team to the final of the CC-2017

The German team qualified for the tournament as the 2014 FIFA World Cup champions. According to the results of the draw for the final part of the CC 2017, Joachim Löw's team was in Group B, which also included the teams of Australia, Chile and Cameroon.

In the first match of the group stage, the Germans barely scored 3 points, beating the Australians with a score of 3:2. The Bundesteam team played the second match against the Chileans and managed to get a draw. In the final match of Group B, the Germans defeated the Cameroonians with a score of 3:1, taking first place.

In the semi-finals of the tournament, the German team met with the Mexican team. The result of the meeting was unexpected. The Germans defeated the ambitious Mexicans with a score of 4:1 and went on to win the Portugal-Chile pair.

Joachim Löw about the tournament

The head coach of the German national team, Joachim Löw, thanked the tournament organizers for the excellent conditions created for his team.

“I would like to thank Russia, you have been good hosts,” Lev said at a press conference. - We played in different cities, at different stadiums, but everywhere the conditions were simply exceptional. The tournament was organized simply wonderful. We met unusual, but very good people. Russia is a most interesting country. We had the opportunity to meet with ordinary Russians, and this communication was very interesting. I would like to thank Russia for organizing such a wonderful tournament.”

This was the first Confederations Cup in history for the German team. Previously, Bundesteam's best result in the tournament was 3rd place in 2005.

Julian Draxler was recognized as the best player of the tournament, and his teammate Timo Werner was recognized as the top scorer.

In 2017, fans of the Russian national team received a unique opportunity to see their team at the Confederations Cup. After all, unfortunately, there is no hope that our team will get there not as the host country of the World Cup, but as the winner of the world or continental championship in the near future.

2017 FIFA Confederations Cup

  • Hosts of the tournament: Russia.
  • Dates: June 17 - July 2.
  • Number of participants: 8.
  • Winner: Germany.
  • Top scorers: Timo Werner, Leon Goretzka, Lars Stindl (all - Germany) - 3 goals each.
  • The best player is Julian Draxler (Germany).

The composition of the groups as a result of the draw was as follows:

  1. Russia, Portugal, Mexico, New Zealand.
  2. Germany, Cameroon, Chile, Australia.

Tournament innovation

Video replays are a revolutionary innovation that all experts and fans have been waiting for, some with bright hopes, and others with indignation. It was stipulated that they can be used in controversial situations when a goal is scored, a penalty is awarded, a penalty is sent off, and a player is determined who should be punished for violating the rules.

I will say right away that the use of video replays has exceeded all expectations; skeptics have virtually no arguments left in favor of abandoning the innovation. More on this below.

Ceremony and opening

The opening ceremony of the tournament took place in St. Petersburg, at the stadium of the same name, which in Russia is usually called “Krestovsky”. About two thousand people in a theatrical show spoke about the traditions, history, culture and nature of Russia.

Group stage

Group A

In the opening match, the Russian team confidently, albeit not without difficulty, defeated the New Zealand team with a score of 2:0. It was clear that our guys were trying hard and playing with full dedication. There was concern that these trump cards alone would not be enough for us in the matches with the Portuguese and Mexicans.

In the end, this is what happened - in the opening of the game against the European champions, the Russian defense blundered Cristiano Ronaldo, but the attack was unable to score. The Russian team got off to a great start in the match with Mexico: the players moved a lot, created chances and opened the scoring. But then they missed a quick return goal, and in the second half they noticeably weakened physically. In the case of the Mexicans' second goal, there was a mistake made by Igor Akinfeev, whose blunders in the game for the national team have become a common occurrence.

The group's favorites, the Portuguese and Mexicans, settled amicably in the first round (the Mexican team won back in the added time by the referee), and then dealt with weaker opponents. The only difference is that the Portuguese did it relatively easily, and the Mexicans did it with quite a lot of effort.

Returning to the topic of video replays. In the Portugal - Mexico match, one goal of the Portuguese was canceled, and the other, on the contrary, was counted after the promoter by the video referee. It took only a few minutes, and the decisions made did not raise any questions in anyone’s mind.

As for the New Zealand team, they showed nothing but fighting qualities. However, no one expected her otherwise. In the match against the Mexican national team, the New Zealanders even opened the scoring - this was done by the Championship representative from Leeds, Chris Wood.

Group B

In this group, the German and Chilean teams were stronger than their competitors, although the Australians and Cameroonians resisted desperately. The fate of the matches Chile - Cameroon and Germany - Cameroon was decided in the last ten minutes, the Australians fought with the Germans to the end, and in the match with the Chilean national team they even played a draw, maintaining their chances of leaving the group until the end of the match.

At the same time, I note that Joachim Löw decided to test the nearest reserve and far from the strongest version of the German national team came to the tournament. However, the Germans have such a large choice of players that even with this lineup they were the favorites of the tournament, having managed to confirm this in practice.

Semi-finals

Chile – Portugal 0:0, on penalties 3:0

The teams played a double-edged match, jointly delivering 30 shots on goal, but failed to score in 120 minutes. Although the Chileans should have done this in their last attack, the ball hit the woodwork twice in a row.

And the penalty shootout turned into a benefit performance for Claudio Bravo, who managed to save all three penalties! I admit, I have never seen anything like it.

Germany – Mexico 4:1 (2:0)

It seems that the Bundesmanschaft players got used to each other during the tournament, at least the German team played better than in the group stage. Already by the 8th minute the scoreboard showed 2:0, Leon Goretzka scored both goals.

After that, the Germans slowed down, and the Mexican national team players went forward and created several very dangerous moments. German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter-Stegen worked hard (he saved 8 shots on target in total), and the Mexicans ruined a number of chances themselves.

In the 59th minute, Timo Werner finally put all questions to rest, and at the end of the match the teams exchanged goals.

Match for 3rd place

Portugal – Mexico 2:1 (0:0, 1:1, extra time – 1:0)

Regarding the holding of matches for third place, the question periodically arises as to why they are needed. This meeting did not raise such questions - the match turned out to be interesting and dramatic.

In the 13th minute, the Portuguese were awarded a penalty, and the referee took advantage of the replay. But Andre Silva's shot was missed (the Portuguese have a curse on penalties in this tournament!).

At the very beginning of the second half, the central defender of the Portuguese national team Neto sends the ball into his own goal, and already in the added time the referee equalized the score.

In overtime, the Portuguese were awarded another penalty, and this time Silva was accurate. The teams ended the match with incomplete squads - Portuguese Nelson Semedo and Mexican Raul Jimenez were sent off from the field. Interestingly, both represented the same club - Benfica.

2017 Confederations Cup Final

Germany - Chile 1:0 (1:0)

The tournament ended with a worthy finale. The start was with the Chileans - they pressed the Germans to the goal and had several good chances to score. And how he failed to finish off the ball after Ter Stegen’s save, which reflected Arthur Vidal’s shot, he himself probably did not understand.

In the 20th minute, the Germans punished the opponent - Timo Werner robbed Marcelo Diaz on the line of someone else's penalty area, was not greedy and rolled the ball to Lars Stindl, who had to hit the empty goal.

Subsequently, the Chileans continued to attack, but the German team survived, and Ter Stegen was recognized as the best player of the match.

  • The Confederations Cup matches took place in four cities - Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi.
  • The Russian national team turned out to be the only team that included players from clubs from the same championship.
  • Mexican Marco Fabian was recognized as the author of the best goal of the tournament (goal in the semi-finals against Germany).
  • According to FIFA, 36 referee decisions at the tournament were made using the VAR system, of which 6 incorrect ones were overturned, each of which influenced the outcome of the matches. After this, almost no one had any questions about the usefulness of video replays.
  • The German national team became the youngest winner of the Confederations Cup, the average age of the players was 24 years and 4 months.
  • tournament was the cat Achilles from the Hermitage. However, unlike many of his predecessors, he did not receive wide fame. After all, every joke is only good the first time.

We can say that the rehearsal for the 2018 World Cup was quite a success. Let's see how the main performance turns out.
