Where the Summer Olympic Games are held. Rio Olympics: how was the opening ceremony

The last days did not subside: athletes, stars and ordinary fans were preparing for this grandiose sports festival. For our country, alas, this time it was overshadowed, because of which many Russian athletes, including the athletics team in full force, could not take part in the 2016 Games. But we won't. The organizers tried to do everything to please the audience and to make this Olympics, which was the first for Brazil, memorable for everyone.

Opening of the 2016 Olympic Games

The current Olympic Games are the first for South America and the second for Latin - in 1968 the Games were held in Mexico. Rio de Janeiro has claimed to host the Olympics more than once: in 1936, 1940, 2004 and 2012. Preparations for a large-scale event went on for several years, and Brazilians had limited funds due to the economic crisis: for example, according to rough estimates, only $ 20 million was spent on the opening ceremony - this is half the cost of the ceremony in London four years ago and, according to rumored to be four times less than Beijing spent on the opening of the Games.

If 40 percent of Brazil's homes don't have sanitation, how can you spend billions on shows?

the Brazilian organizers asked.

And yet, even with such a modest budget by the standards of the world community, the Brazilians managed to arrange a colorful show - with special effects, video projections, dances and songs. In total, about 35 thousand people were involved in the opening ceremony, and the TV audience of the event amounted to about four billion people!

The venue was the Maracana stadium, where a large-scale production dedicated to the history of Brazil and its future unfolded:

Athens, Beijing and London told about the history and heroic past of their countries, and we will show what we should become in the future,

- explained shortly before the start of the Olympics, the creative director of the opening ceremony.

A record number of giant LED screens and video systems, the latest audio and video equipment were installed at the arena, which made it possible to turn the entire stadium into an organism pulsating in a single rhythm.

The ceremony began with the appearance of two air figures and a short greeting to the presenter. Dressed in all white, she gave a speech about peace and love, after which the Brazilian national anthem played - it was played by the famous samba performer Paulinho da Viola.

Then the arena was covered in green and turned into a forest: a video projection symbolized the origin of life in Brazil - first there was a forest, the basis of the country's life, and only then did people appear.

One scene after another in the stadium: the arrival of Europeans on ships, the arrival of Japanese immigrants who taught Brazilians judo, the construction of megacities, the first airplane created by aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont...

Of course, one of the highlights was the appearance of the amazing . The Brazilian supermodel, who conquered the world and ended her professional career, nevertheless once again stepped on the podium, albeit an improvised one, to walk in front of tens of thousands of spectators.

Gisele Bundchen

The musical part continued the ceremony: a potpourri of Brazilian hits from various directions. Samba, rap, folk songs - what was not there. Some songs were sung by the whole stadium!

All this was accompanied by dances of artists in the arena, because it is difficult to imagine Brazilian culture without dancing. They also paid tribute to the Brazilian national martial art of capoeira, which combines elements of dance and acrobatics and is accompanied by national music.

But all this was a prelude to the main topic - the environmental problems of our time, which became the central plot of the entire opening ceremony. The Brazilians decided to focus on environmental issues when directing the show, and proudly called the 2016 Games the first environmental Olympics (that's why the ceremony began with a video projection of the forest!). For Brazil, environmental problems are very acute, because the massive deforestation of the jungle in the 20th century caused serious damage to the country.

But at the ceremony, it was not only about Brazil, but about the fate of the entire planet - global warming, which will change the map of the world once and for all. The organizers presented this threatening picture clearly, showing how the world's oceans will wipe out countries and cities from the face of the earth if the temperature rises by another 4 degrees.

The world must unite in the face of a threat in order to save the planet for posterity - such a call to humanity was thrown by the Brazilians at the opening ceremony. And so, this time, all participants in the parade of athletes planted tree seeds - each team was given special bags, which the athletes placed in special cabinets. From these seeds, a forest will then grow: it will contain 207 species of trees - exactly the same number of countries taking part in the current Olympics.

The parade of athletes was opened by the delegation of Greece, as always, because it was in this country that the Olympic Games were born, and closed by Brazil. Interestingly, the schedule for the appearance of the national teams at the stadium was unusual, not in the alphabetical order that we are used to. All because they were repelled from the Portuguese language.

Each of the 207 teams was greeted with applause and shouts, but of course we were waiting. Our athletes - only 250 people - appeared on the arena only 159 in a row.

The standard-bearer of the Russian national team was the legendary volleyball player and Olympic champion Sergei Tetyukhin. The flags of other national teams were carried by no less famous athletes, whose names the whole world knows: for example, the most titled Olympian in history, Michael Phelps, became the flag bearer of the United States.

The parade of athletes lasted for several hours, during which the music did not stop at the Maracanã stadium. Finally, all the teams took their places, and the final part of the ceremony began.

In the arena, the artists with huge mirror cabinets lined up in Olympic rings, which, to the amazement of the audience, opened up and suddenly turned into a real jungle - there was a tree in each locker. A riot of greenery swept the stadium, after which fireworks burst out.

The official part was still ahead: after the salute, their speeches (about the refugee team, world peace, the holiday of sports, unity and much more) were said by representatives of the IOC and other officials, who declared the 2016 Olympics officially open.

There was a touching moment: the legendary Kenyan runner Kipchoge Keino appeared at the stadium, who was awarded a special award - the Olympic Laurel Branch for his contribution to the development of the Olympic movement.

Thomas Bach

Well, what's next? And then the whole stadium turned into one big party: samba sounded in the arena, because 12 of the best Rio samba schools appeared on the field at once. Everyone danced, young and old. There was only one thing left - to light the Olympic flame. This honor was entrusted to several eminent Brazilian athletes at once, who lit the Olympic cup. And after a few minutes, she began to rise into the air, after which a structure in the form of the sun hung over the stadium.

Fireworks shot up into the air again. Again, the stands filled with enthusiastic shouts. The ceremony is over, and the competition has just begun. In a few hours, the first sets of medals will be played in Rio - we hope the Russians will be able to prove themselves!

During these three weeks of the Olympics, we will follow the progress of our team and tell you about all the most interesting things that happen in Rio. In the meantime, we offer to recall the past opening ceremony and see vivid shots.

Where will the 2016 Olympic Games be held? The next Summer Olympic Games 2016 will be held for the first time in their history in South America. This sports championship of the planet will be held in Brazil from 5 to 21 August.

Hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics

An application for the right to host this most prestigious sporting event was filed back in 2007. The following countries took part in the competition: Azerbaijan, USA, Spain, Japan, Qatar, Czech Republic and Brazil. Based on the results of the competition, four applicant cities were selected: Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago and Rio de Janeiro. In 2009, the International Olympic Committee held several tours of these cities and made the final decision on where these sports competitions would be held. The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro will be the winning city and host of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Before that, Brazil made several attempts and submitted an application to the International Olympic Committee, but never made it to the final. According to preliminary data, more than 12 thousand athletes from 205 countries of the world will participate in the games. 306 sets of awards will be drawn. At the moment, the budget for the Olympics is $2.95 billion, and this does not take into account the costs that the government has allocated for the development of infrastructure in the places where the competitions will be held. Such a huge amount was the result of accounting for rising inflation, the use of the most advanced technologies and changes in some programs.

It should be noted that the program of the 2016 Olympics itself has not undergone significant changes, this is when compared with the previous Games held in 2012 in London, the capital of Great Britain. It was slightly supplemented with some provisions. For example, some sports have been added: golf, beach soccer, a simplified version of rugby and street basketball. The ongoing 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be the first environmentally friendly sporting event in history.

Especially for the Olympics, the RAFAA company from Switzerland built a huge waterfall that runs on solar panels and accumulates solar energy throughout the day. According to the developers, the capacity of this unique facility will be enough to fully provide electricity to the Olympic village and the entire city. The city authorities presented an improved transportation system Bus Rapid Transit. This vehicle will deliver people to various Olympic venues, moving along lanes specially allocated for it and linking city districts with each other.

Olympic venues

The organizers of the games have allocated several areas for competitions, which are discussed below.

Barra

Most of the Olympics will be held in Barra. Several sports facilities were built in this place. Water polo and diving competitions will take place in the Maria Lenk Water Park. Rhythmic and artistic gymnastics competitions will be held at the Olympic Arena. The Riocenter will host boxing and weightlifting competitions. Basketball and martial arts competitions will be held in the Olympic halls. In addition, there is a Velodrome and a Tennis Center in Barra.

Deodoro

The following sports competitions will be held in this zone:

  • mountain bike;
  • Rowing slalom;
  • Pentathlon;
  • Shooting;
  • Equestrian competitions;
  • Fencing.

Maracana

This grandiose sports facility is one of the most popular football stadiums in the world. This stadium will host the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics, as well as the football championship, in which not only Rio de Janeiro, but also other Brazilian cities will participate. It is worth noting that in this zone there is the Joao Havelange facility, where athletics competitions will be held, as well as the Maracanazinho sports complex, where volleyball competitions will be held. Small Olympic villages have been built for media representatives at the competition venues.

Copacabana

Copacabana is considered one of the famous and picturesque beaches in the world. In this place, the organizers of the games plan to hold competitions in the following sports:

  • Swimming;
  • Sailing;
  • Rowing;
  • Triathlon.

Mascots and symbols of the 2016 Olympics

We found out that the 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, and now let's talk about what the mascot will be. The 2016 Olympic Games will be held under the auspices of talismans that symbolize the Brazilian flora and fauna: a cat-like yellow animal and a blue-green plant, in which you can see the outlines of an exotic flower and tree. According to the results of the Internet voting, the mascots were named Vinicius and Tom, in honor of the famous Brazilian musicians.

During the development of the visual image of the Olympics, the designers pursued the goal of creating a feeling of a festive and at the same time solemn atmosphere for the guests of Rio de Janeiro. Here you can see the main values and attributes of the city, as well as some of the elements that emphasize its passion and volatility.

In addition, the developed image reflects the places of Brazilian cities, which will host football matches of the Football Championship: Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte. This Olympic image can be seen on tickets, posters, on sports facilities where sports competitions will be held. Medals for rewarding athletes will be made from precious metals obtained from the processing of electrical appliances. It is planned to produce about 5,000 medals for awarding, as well as about 75,000 commemorative medals and badges.

How much will the tickets cost

Many sports fans are wondering what the cost of tickets for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be? The organizers of this event released the following information: the cheapest ticket will cost 14 euros, and the most expensive - 420 euros. It is well known that the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games are considered the most spectacular, memorable and grandiose events. In order to get to these events, you will need to pay about 1,000 euros. Tickets can be purchased from the beginning of 2016 on the official website of the organizers of the games.

Volunteering

The organizers of the 2016 Olympics plan to attract about 60,000 volunteers to participate in all events. Application deadline was until the end of 2015. Anyone over the age of 18 could offer their services, regardless of their gender and nationality. Selected candidates are provided with special trainings online, during which they are introduced to the features of the upcoming work, as well as to the places where the Games will be held. During the Olympics, all volunteers will be provided with appropriate equipment and food. True, they will need to get to Rio de Janeiro at their own expense. At the end of the Olympic Games, all volunteers will receive exclusive gifts and special certificates.

Ready for the Olympics

Finally, we found out where the 2016 Olympics will be held. But the following should be noted: the International Olympic Committee is of the opinion that Brazil is not quite ready to host the Olympics. This is due to the fact that the organizers do not have enough finances and therefore they do not invest in the deadlines allotted for preparation. IOC officials say funding for all preparations is being delayed. Many sports facilities have not yet been completed, and Rio de Janeiro still lacks the necessary infrastructure and there is a shortage of hotel rooms.

It is also worth noting this fact: Guonabara Bay is heavily polluted and the authorities are now working on cleaning it up, because it is here that sailing, kayaking and canoeing competitions will be held. The organizers assure that by the beginning of the Olympics, all pollution will be eliminated. Information has appeared in the media that the organizers may change the venue for the 2016 Summer Olympics. According to some reports, the International Olympic Committee asked the British authorities about the possibility of holding the Olympics in London for the second time in a row.

To which the British authorities agreed and assured that London was quite ready to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Although there are no official statements about this. Now representatives of the International Olympic Committee are taking a number of decisions to stabilize the situation. They offered the Brazilian authorities their assistance in the implementation of certain activities, as well as their readiness to constantly monitor the preparations for the Games so that they take place at the highest level. According to the situation that has developed at the end of 2015, they do not intend to transfer the Olympic Games to another country, and they will take place, as planned, in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

August 14, 2016.

On the ninth day of the competition, Russian athletes won 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Greco-Roman wrestler Roman Vlasov (up to 75 kg), gymnast Aliya Mustafina (bars) and tennis players Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina (doubles) brought gold to Russia. Gymnast Maria Paseka (vault) and shooter Sergei Kamensky (rifle, 50m, three positions) won silver, cyclist Denis Dmitriev (individual sprint) and yachtswoman Stefania Elfutina (RS:X) won bronze.

Russia has the first medal in sailing since 1996. In the RS:X class (windsurfing), 19-year-old Stefania Elfutina won bronze.

The Frenchwoman Charlene Picon became the Olympic champion, the silver went to the Chinese Chen Payne.

Stefania Elfutina from the very first day, August 8, joined the fight for medals and never lost contact with the leaders. After the first day of competition, she was second, after half of the scheduled flights - third, a day later she was one point closer to the leader of the regatta - Flavia Tartaglini from Italy. According to the results of the penultimate racing day, Elfutina became the leader of the overall standings. Alas, after one of the numerous protests, Tartaglini got an extra point and caught up with Elfutina. And since she has a victory in one of the flights, and the Russian woman does not, the Italian has returned the leading position.

The line-up for the Medal Race, a "medal race" where all points are doubled, was as follows: Tartaglini - first (55 points), Elfutina - second (55), from third to fifth places were occupied by Chinese Chen, Frenchwoman Picon and Israeli Davidovich (60 points each). ). It turned out that in a bad scenario, the Russian woman could have been left without medals at all, especially considering that she scored all the points due to stability, never winning a single flight in the entire regatta.

Officially, the Women's Medal Race in the "RS:X" class was supposed to start at 14:05 local time, but time passed, conflicting information came in, and nothing started. Finally at 15:35 the start was given. The wind was not strong - about 10 knots (15 is considered good). But a red flag was lit in front of Elfutina. All rivals went into the race, and the Russian woman had just started.

“I am very ashamed, but I still don’t understand why I was given a warning,” Elfutin told reporters after Elfutina: “There are no complaints against the judges, which means she deserved it. But what exactly happened, I don't know right now."

Probably, only she knows that it cost her half an hour almost calm to rise from the last, tenth, to sixth place, overtaking the favorite, Tartaglini, and snatch this bronze: “I just thought that I had two options: give up and wait another four years or do something about it. And then I decided: no, four years is too much, I’ll try now.”

She was desperately "gliding", trying to accelerate and get far-gone rivals! Of course, it was lucky that the wind was very weak: Elfutina is good in such weather due to her physical strength, and this allows her to keep the board in “gliding” much longer than her rivals (she says that she calmly does 20-25 pull-ups, but maybe more).

Absolutely - this moment will go down in the history of our sailing.

Aliya Mustafina is a two-time Olympic champion.

She was ahead of her main rival American Madison Kochyan in the uneven bars exercise by 0.067 points. The bronze medalist was the German Sophie Scheder.

"Everything went well," Aliya said after the performance: "Moreover, I think it was my best combination of the four made at the Olympics. It turned out cleaner than the rest. I collected this combination when I arrived here in Rio. Trained from base 6, 5, but performed from a base of 6.8. Once I came to the gym and realized that I didn’t want to perform with a simple program, that I would gather all my strength and do a complex one.

In the all-around, I did not show my maximum on three shells at once - on the balance beam, on the uneven bars and in floor exercises. But on the other hand, it would be very difficult for me to overtake the Americans, only in case of their mistakes it was possible.

The US team won the medal standings of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Russian team came fourth.

Americans in Rio won 46 gold, 37 silver and 38 bronze medals. The US men's basketball team won the last gold medal at the Rio Olympics. Team Great Britain took second place in the medal standings with 27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze medals. The Chinese came third with 26 gold, 18 silver and 26 bronze medals. The Russian team won 56 medals in Rio - 19 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze medals. The German team took the fifth place with 17 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals.

After the 15th medal day, the US team secured victory in the unofficial medal count, with 116 medals to its credit, of which 43 were gold. The Russian team climbed to fourth place in this standings with 53 medals, including 17 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze.

No chance for rivals

Russian Margarita Mamun won gold in the individual all-around, ahead of her teammate Yana Kudryavtseva, who became the absolute world champion for three years in a row. Kudryavtseva made a mistake in the clubs exercise, receiving a deduction for this element, and the score prevented her from qualifying for gold after Mamun completed her fourth form - the ribbon. However, silver medalist Kudryavtseva stressed that she was happy to have a medal, because in her life the Olympic Games might not have happened at all.

“I won’t think about it yet (about participating in the 2020 Olympics). I love Tokyo, it's one of my favorite cities, we go there every year to compete. I am sure that they will hold the Olympics at the highest level. I don’t think, but I would like to,” said 20-year-old Mamun after the victory.

Kudryavtseva also noted that she hopes to perform at the Tokyo Games in four years.

“I'm glad for the silver, I'm glad that it's over. We will be content with what we have, because all this could not have happened. There might not be the Games. I managed to cry after the clubs, but the coach and I talked. She said, "Let go of all emotions." And I already went out and performed calmly. Now from the bottom of my heart I am extremely happy with my silver. I cried, maybe because it was all over. While I’m resting, God forbid, I’ll reach Tokyo, and I’ll perform there, I’m only 19 years old, ”said Kudryavtseva.

In the morning, the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team in group exercises qualified with the second result for the finals of the Olympic tournament, which will be held on Sunday. Anastasia Maksimova, Anastasia Bliznyuk, Anastasia Tatareva, Maria Tolkacheva and Vera Biryukova scored 35.516 points in the sum of two exercises - with five ribbons and with two hoops and six maces. The first place was taken by the Spaniards, the third in the qualification were the Belarusians. The teams of Italy, Japan, Israel, Bulgaria and Ukraine also made it to the final.

Historic success of handball players

Russian handball players on Saturday for the first time won the gold medals of the Olympics. In the final, the team of Evgeny Trefilov defeated the French women - 22:19. The game as a whole was held with the advantage of the Russians, only in the second half the rivals managed to equalize the score once, but the Russian team again went into the lead and brought the matter to victory.

For two Russian handball players - Ekaterina Marennikova and Irina Bliznova - these medals were the second in their careers. In 2008, they already became the silver medalists of the Beijing Games. After the victory in Rio, the captain of the Russian national team Bliznova announced her retirement. “I put a golden point in my career,” the athlete said.

Trefilov said he has no plans to leave the Russian national team yet. “I have all the titles except the European Championship. So this tournament will work with the national team for sure. Let's try to work out another Olympic cycle, why not? Another thing is that everything is possible in life, ”said the coach of the champions.

Lesun tore everyone

The modern pentathlon Olympic tournament ended with the triumph of the Russian Alexander Lesun, who, after an excellent result in fencing, held out at a satisfactory level in swimming and show jumping, although there were problems with the horse (3 falls), but managed to start first and not give up any position at the finish line.

According to the results of four events, the Russian scored 1479 points, setting a new Olympic record. Silver went to the Ukrainian Pavel Timoshchenko (1472). Bronze at the Mexican Marcelo Hernandez (1468). “I went out, and there was a feeling that I would tear everyone here. I felt like a master here, ”the Olympic champion shared his mood.

“Alexander is the best athlete in the world, he has proven this throughout his career. Not without reason, in an interview, when asked about the real main competitor, he said: “My competitor is Alexander Lesun.” This victory is first of all for President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, because the attention and support that he gives to our sport, there is no such support anywhere in the world,” said Vyacheslav Aminov, head of the Federation of Modern Pentathlon of Russia.

Sadulaev could not lose

Freestyle wrestler Abdulrashid Sadulayev won a gold medal in the weight category up to 86 kg on Saturday. The two-time world champion confidently went through the entire tournament bracket, defeating the Olympic champion from Azerbaijan Sharif Sharifov in the semifinals, and in the final against Zelimkhan Kartoev, a native of Ingushetia, who now plays for Turkey under the name Selim Yasar.

“The Olympics has been my dream since childhood, today the dream has come true,” said the champion. - I am very glad that I justified the hopes of coaches and fans. This is our common victory. I do not set myself the goal of 10-0 to do. I go out on the carpet, and there how it goes. Each time it becomes harder and harder to fight with rivals, so you need to fight twice as much in training. We didn't have a gold medal yesterday, so I had to win anyway, there's no other way."

The bronze medalist of the 2012 Olympics, three-time world champion Bilyal Makhov (125) performed extremely unsuccessfully - the heavyweight lost the first meeting and dropped out of the fight for the tournament medals.

Obstacle racing with a broken finger

Russian cyclist Irina Kalentyeva was left without a medal in the women's cross-country. The leader of the Russian national mountain bike team came to the finish line 17th, but as always, unbending and with a positive attitude. Before this Olympics, Kalentyeva missed several races, as at the start of the season she underwent surgery for appendicitis, and in training before the competition, already in Rio, she broke her thumb.

“The operation for appendicitis also affected, and I broke my big finger shortly before the race, but I passed. Maybe this is my last Olympics, we'll see. In the meantime, I'm getting ready for the World Cup stage in Andorra and for the next season, - Kalentyeva told reporters. - The starting position was not the best, and five months of training to reach a high level after an appendicitis operation is not enough. But I got there, albeit in the middle. I think that even participating in the Olympic Games is great. I’m not at the peak of my form yet, I intend to get it by the World Cup final.”

Gold in this type of program was won by the Swede Jenny Rissveds (1:30.15), the second was the representative of Poland Maya Wloszczowska (1:30.52), the third - Katharin Pendrel from Canada (1:31.41).

Minibaev completed the medalless tread of the jumpers

Now we can definitely say that Russian divers for the first time in 28 years leave the Olympic Games without medals. The last chance for them to win a medal in Rio was the final in the individual platform diving, where Viktor Minibaev went, but he also remained outside the prize-winners (8th result).

“There is disappointment, but life does not stand still. I will prepare for the World Championships in Budapest and the Olympics in Tokyo. But I am not satisfied with our head coach (Oleg Zaitsev) in terms of his work: he is on his own, he does not say anything to anyone, everything is always at the very last moment. It seems to me that, as a head coach, he should support us, and for two weeks in Rio he never approached me, did not ask how things were going, ”Minibaev said after his performance at the Games.

The debutant of the Games, Nikita Shleikher, who stopped at the previous stage of the tournament, remained outside the final. Following the results of the semi-finals, Schleicher stopped the fight and did it in good company - the medalist of the Games and one of the main stars of diving Thomas Daly (Great Britain) also could not get into the final. “Now I have even more motivation before Tokyo, I want to be an Olympic champion in individual platform diving,” Daly admitted.

Well, the Chinese Chen Aisen won that day, the Mexican Herman Sanchez won the silver, the American David Budaya won the bronze.

Shtokalov without a second medal

The Russian national rowing and canoeing team was left without medals on the last day of competition at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Russians Ilya Shtokalov and Ilya Pervukhin took fifth place in the canoe-deuce competition at a distance of 1000 meters. German rowers Sebastian Brendel and Jan Wandrei won the gold medal. At the same time, during the swim, the Russians, for whom the Games became the first tournament in one crew, were in second position.

Also on that day, the crew of the kayak-four consisting of Roman Anoshkin, Vasily Pogreban, Kirill Lyapunov and Oleg Zhestkov, who unexpectedly did not make it to the final A, showed the first result in the repechage race. The German men's team celebrated the victory in the main final of these competitions.

Evgeny Lukantsov came sixth in the final B in the 200m kayakers' competition, in which Briton Liam Heath won the gold medal. The crew of the Hungarian women's team became the first in the 500-meter kayak fours competition, making Donata Kozak a five-time Olympic champion.

Verchenova showed the best result, but too late

The second set of awards was played in a golf tournament, the Korean Pak Inbi became the Olympic champion. Russia's Maria Verchenova had the best result on the fourth day, setting a field record, and soared to 16th place in the final classification. It is noteworthy that she went through one of the holes in just one hit.

The women's triathlon race proved to be pretty predictable across the board. The winner was the American Gwen Jorgensen, who has dominated the sport in recent years, and the silver medalist was the champion of London 2012, Swiss Nicola Spirig. The Russians also, as expected, took places below the second ten: 20th place is Alexandra Razarenov (lag +4.53), 25th - Maria Shorets (+5.17), 32nd - Anastasia Abrosimova (+6.29).

Neymar led the Brazilians to victory

The Brazil national football team defeated the German team in the final of the home Olympic Games, taking revenge for a humiliating defeat at the home World Cup. The main time of the match at the Maracana stadium ended with a score of 1: 1 - the Germans answered the goal of Neymar (27th minute) with the ball of Max Mayer (59). In the penalty shootout, the home side won 5-4, with Neymar converting the decisive blow. Bronze was won by the Nigerians, who beat Honduras in the match for third place - 3:2.

Meanwhile, the US basketball players expectedly won gold medals, defeating the Spaniards with a score of 101:72 in the final. Bronze medals were previously won by the basketball players of the Serbian national team, who defeated France. Gold came to the Serbs in men's water polo, in the final of which they defeated the Croats, and the Italians became the third.

Other Olympic champions on Saturday were boxers Arlen Lopez and Robeisi Ramirez (both Cubans), Briton Nicola Adams, Chinese badminton player Chen Long, German javelin thrower Thomas Rehler and Spanish high jumper Ruth Beitia.

Five sets of awards were played at once in the run: the British Mo Farah won the 5000 meters, the American Matthew Tsentrowitz - the 1500 meters, the South African Caster Semenya - the 800 meters, and the US women's and men's teams in the relay 4 x 400 meters.

Finally, the game day ended with a volleyball match between the women's teams of China and Serbia. The offenders of the Russian national team at the quarterfinal stage, the Serbians confidently won the first set 25:19, but later they could not impose a serious struggle on the Chinese women and eventually lost in the next three - 17:25, 22:25, 23:25. The bronze medal match took place earlier, the American athletes were stronger than the Netherlands in four sets - 25:23, 25:27, 25:22, 25:19.

The final in this weight category will take place at 23:30 Moscow time.

21:30. Women. France - Russia

For the first time since 2000, the Russian national team made it to the finals of the women's handball tournament, giving their fans a nervous tic and graying whiskey in the match with Norway. 00:00. Men. Running + shooting

The battle for awards in the modern pentathlon is coming to an end, where Russian Alexander Lesun, a two-time world champion in the individual competition, has good chances for a medal. Now the Russian has a lead of 30 points from the opponent following him, setting an Olympic record in fencing along the way.

22:30. Men. Tower 10 m

The Russian diving team did not excel this time. Since the time of the magnificent Dmitry Sautin, Dmitry Dobroskok and Gleb Galperin, Russian jumpers are less and less likely to give an equal fight to the representatives of China and Great Britain. Day 11, August 16, 2016, Broadcasts watch online:

Wrestler Roman Vlasov, gymnast Aliya Mustafina and tennis players Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova secured a record-breaking result for Russia in terms of gold medals won at the current Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro - three awards at the end of the competitive day.

Sunday, which smoothly flowed into Monday, was also remembered as another round in the proceedings with the Russian athlete Daria Klishina, who was not allowed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to participate in the Olympics because of her appearance in the report of the independent commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Unbending Aliya

Mustafina's gold in the uneven bars exercise, which is considered her crowning form, became extremely important. The Russian woman became a two-time Olympic champion, winning the second gold in this discipline in a row after London 2012. It was not easy for her to do this due to the fact that at these Games she performed with back pain, but despite this, she also won silver in the team competition and bronze in the individual all-around.

On uneven bars, Mustafina won with a score of 15.900, ahead of American Madison Cochan (15.833) and Germany's Sophie Scheder (15.566).

Many expected that Mustafina might announce her retirement, but the head coach of the Russian national team Valentina Rodionenko told TASS that the 21-year-old athlete intends to rest for two years, and then start preparing for the Olympic cycle before the 2020 Games in Tokyo. The athlete herself later confirmed this.

In addition, Maria Paseka placed second in the vault, in which she is the reigning world champion. American Simone Biles won gold in Rio de Janeiro already in the all-around and in team competitions, the third place was taken by Switzerland's Julia Steingruber.

The legendary 41-year-old Oksana Chusovitina, who played for the national teams of the USSR, the United Team, Germany and now represents Uzbekistan, became the seventh, but at the same time she said that she did not intend to end her career, but wanted to play at the World Championships next year in Canada.

Briton Max Whitlock successfully performed in men, winning gold in floor exercises and on pommel horse. The Russians did not compete in the freestyle, and in the exercise on horseback David Belyavsky and Nikolai Kuksenkov took fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Historic tennis gold

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina for the first time in the history of the Russian team won the Olympic gold in women's doubles. The girls in the Olympic final did not leave a chance to the Swiss couple Martina Hingis/Timea Baczynski, beating them with a score of 6:4, 6:4. It is noteworthy that the Russians risked missing the 2016 Olympics altogether, because due to a plane breakdown and bad weather they did not have time for a flight from Canada and barely managed to arrive on the eve of the start of the Olympic tournament.

After the final, Hingis recognized the strength of the Russians, and Vesnina and Makarova themselves said that the Olympics were a priority tournament for them this year, for which they suffered trials related to delayed flights and poor living conditions at the Games.

The tennis tournament of the Olympics ended with the men's final, in which Briton Andy Murray defeated Argentinean Juan Martin del Potro with a score of 7:5, 4:6, 6:2, 7:5. Japan's Kei Nishikori won the bronze medal after beating 2008 Olympic champion Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Murray became the first tennis player in Olympic history to win two gold medals in an individual tournament. Four years ago, he won the 2012 Olympics in London, and also won silver in the mixed doubles.

Repeat the path of Karelin

In the evening program, Russia rightly expected a victory from the Greco-Roman wrestler in the weight category up to 75 kg Roman Vlasov. The 25-year-old Russian justified his hopes.

Vlasov did not leave a chance to any of his rivals, and in the final he defeated the Dane Mark Madsen with a score of 5:1. The Russian did not stop the episode that was unpleasant for him in the semi-finals, where the judge allowed the Croatian Bozho Starcevic to strangle the Russian, because of which he lost consciousness, but soon came to his senses and won the fight.

Thus, Vlasov became a two-time Olympic champion, having won four years ago in London. Four years later in Tokyo, he has a chance to repeat the record of Alexander Karelin, who won three gold in a row (1988, 1992, 1996). The two-time winner of the Games himself said that it was impossible to beat Karelin's record. “This man (Karelin. - TASS note) did everything in sports. He is a colossus, ”said Vlasov.

Silver Kamensky and bronze Elfutina in windsurfing

The final day of the Olympic shooting competitions turned out to be extremely offensive, where two Russians reached the final of the discipline in rifle shooting from 50 meters from three positions - Sergey Kamensky and Fedor Vlasov, who became the first in the qualification.

Before his final shots for the first place, Kamensky was ahead of the Italian Nicola Campriani, who had already become the Olympic champion in air rifle shooting from 10 meters. The Italian missed the last shot, but Kamensky shot even worse, becoming the vice-champion.

Bronze was won by Frenchman Alexis Reynaud. Vlasov, who was in the lead during the final, became the seventh.

The results of the shooting tournament turned out to be successful for domestic representatives of bullet shooting and unsuccessful for representatives of clay shooting. In bullet shooting, the Russians won four medals: two silver and two bronze. At the same time, they did not have a single one in Olympic London. In trap shooting, none of the Russians even managed to overcome the qualification.

Stefania Elfutina won the first Olympic medal in domestic sailing among women, who became the third in the RS:X class (windsurfing). The Frenchwoman Charlene Picon won (64), the second was the Chinese Chen Payna (66). The last time the Russians won medals in sailing was 20 years ago in Atlanta: Georgy Shayduko, Igor Skalin and Dmitry Shabanov won silver in the Soling class.

Bronze in the personal sprint in the cycle track was won by Denis Dmitriev. In the fight for third place, the Russian in both heats was stronger than the Australian Matthew Gletzer. Briton Jason Kenny won the gold medal, beating his compatriot Callum Skinner in the final. In the track cycling at the 2016 Games, the UK team has already won 6 medals in 6 disciplines (4 gold and 2 silver). For the Russian team, the Dmitriev medal in this discipline at the Olympic Games was a debut: the previous time a domestic cyclist won the Games medal in the individual sprint in the cycling track in 1988 in Seoul, when the Soviet athlete Nikolai Kovsh became the silver medalist.

Anastasia Voinova, the silver medalist of the Games in the team sprint, continues to fight in the cycling track, who reached the 1/8 finals in the sprint.

WADA accused Klishina of hiding samples

Confirmation came out from the words of Klishina's lawyer Paul Green that the athlete could open doping tests made during the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. According to the representative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Mark Adams during the briefing of the organization, the athlete will not speak at the Games if her name is mentioned in the McLaren report.

“The Klishina situation is an IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) matter,” Adams said. - We have already said that each federation makes decisions on such cases. As for the McLaren report, this is one of the three key components that allow Russian athletes to prove their innocence. WADA has made sure that all federations are aware of this information and we should ask the IAAF about Klishina."

“If you are somehow affected by the McLaren report, you are out of the game. This was one of the key conditions for the participation or non-participation of Russian athletes in the Games in Rio de Janeiro,” Adams emphasized.

As if in response to this, the President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Alexander Zhukov, said that the Russian team had passed about 360 doping tests in Tbilisi.

CAS allowed Klishina to the 2016 Games

On Monday morning it became known that CAS granted the appeal of the Russian athlete Daria Klishina against the decision of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to prevent her from participating in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Russian athletes were suspended from participating in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro due to the disqualification of the national federation, only Klishina, who lives and trains abroad, was supposed to perform at the Games. CAS on July 21 unanimously decided to reject the claim of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and domestic athletes to the IAAF for non-admission to the Games.

“I have mixed feelings,” Zabelinskaya said immediately after the finish. - Yes, I became an Olympic silver medalist, and in the situation in which I found myself, this is an excellent result. On the other hand, I could become a champion. Armstrong beat me by only 5 seconds, it's a shame to lose so little in the last segment.

“Olga is quite capable of withstanding another Olympic cycle and preparing well for the next 2020 Games in Tokyo. I take into account her attitude to sports, and her health still allows her to show good results, ”adviser to the president of the Russian Cycling Federation Alexander Gusyatnikov told TASS.

21:00 Shooting / Women. Ladder. The final

The XXXI Summer Olympic Games kicked off in Brazilian Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. 306 sets of medals will be played on them. Athletes from 203 countries of the world will compete for them. In addition, athletes from the refugee team will perform under the Olympic flag.

Note that the Brazilian resort needed a lot of money to host the 2016 Games. More than $9 billion was spent on the construction of Olympic facilities and the reconstruction of the transport system alone. The share of the state and private investors in this amount is divided approximately 50/50.

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, prize medals will be awarded in the following sports:

  • badminton;
  • cycling;
  • volleyball;
  • basketball;
  • boxing;
  • judo;
  • rowing slalom;
  • Beach volleyball;
  • Horseback Riding;
  • handball;
  • Athletics;
  • rugby 7;
  • rowing and canoeing;
  • football and field hockey;
  • Weightlifting;
  • modern pentathlon;
  • table tennis;
  • water polo;
  • rowing;
  • golf;
  • sailing;
  • swimming;
  • diving;
  • triathlon;
  • fencing;
  • synchronized swimming;
  • shooting;
  • archery;
  • sports and rhythmic gymnastics;
  • trampolining;
  • tennis;
  • taekwondo.

It is noteworthy that two new sports were included in the Olympic Games: golf and rugby-7s.

Four main Olympic venues

The most important sporting events will take place in the Barra Tijuca Park near Lake Jacarepagua. This place has three "Carioca Arena". They will host competitions in such sports as:

  • judo;
  • struggle;
  • basketball;
  • taekwondo;
  • fencing.

There is also a water stadium, an Olympic tennis center, a water sports center named after Maria Lenk, a handball Future Arena, three Riocentro pavilions (table tennis, boxing and badminton), a golf course, a gymnastics arena, a velodrome and a water stadium.

As for the other three clusters: Maracana, Deodoro and Copacabana then competitions in other sports should be held on their territory.

It is important to emphasize that the opening ceremony was held in Marakana and the closing ceremony of the 2016 Games should take place.

Only those countries whose Olympic committees are members of the IOC are eligible to participate in the Rio Olympics. These are 206 countries. For the first time ever, a “team of refugees” (South Sudan, Kosovo) will compete for Olympic medals.

By the way, the United States will have the largest representation. As many as 554 athletes. In second place are Brazilian athletes with 465 people. Russia will be represented at the Rio Games with 271 athletes. This number was approved by the IOC. Initially, there was an application for 389 athletes, but some of the athletes did not pass the tolerances according to certain criteria.

On the criteria for the selection of Russian athletes

After lengthy proceedings in a high-profile anti-doping scandal, at first it was decided not to allow the Russian national team in full force to the 2016 Olympics. This applied even to those athletes who had never taken doping. But after some time, It was decided to select Russian athletes according to the main and only criterion - the absence of any anti-doping rule violations. Like: 0

A few hours remain before the start of the XXXI Summer Olympic Games 2016, which will be held in South America for the first time in history: on August 5, 2016, the opening ceremony of the competition will take place in Rio de Janeiro at the Maracana Stadium, which will last until August 21.

For 16 days at four venues in the country - Maracana, Barra, Deodoro, Copacobana - athletes from 200 countries will fight for the title of the strongest on the planet.

Although the script for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games (Russians will be able to watch the broadcast of the opening at 2 am from August 5 to 6 on Russia 1 TV channel, commentator Dmitry Guberniev) in Brazilian Rio is kept in the strictest confidence, some details have already become known. Thus, the Western media replicated the words of the executive producer of the ceremony in Rio da Janeiro, who said that the current opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil will be different from many recent ceremonies. The organizers said that in order to save money - hosting the Olympics is very honorable, but very expensive - the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games will be smaller, but modern and therefore spectacular. By the way, the Brazilians were able to “pack” the opening ceremony at 10% of the cost of a similar event in London.

For viewers from the Russian Federation, the Olympic Games will be broadcast by Channel One, VGTRK, Match TV.

Participating countries of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, talismans, chances of the Russian team

The thirty-first Olympic Games in Brazil, which will last sixteen days, will be attended by 10,500 athletes from 205 countries. They will compete in 42 sports and compete for 306 medals. Even on the last day of the Olympic Games, a few hours before the closing ceremony, athletes in 8 sports will fight for victory.

Interestingly, for the first time in many years rugby-7s and golf are included in the program of the 2016 Olympics, which are not newcomers, but the period of their absence is measured by almost a hundred years.

As for the chances of success for our team, which, we recall, did not include athletes, it is clear that it will not succeed in fighting for victory in the Olympic medal standings and the Brazilian Olympics will most likely become the most disastrous in the history of the country. But in some sports, Russians can count on success. We are talking about traditionally “our” disciplines in which we have won many times - wrestling, boxing, rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming. Can "shoot" and other types in which the Russians are strong, but have not yet achieved success. These are rowing, shooting, volleyball, water polo and others.

Russians can count on success in synchronized swimming

However, every third Russian who took part in the VTsIOM survey is confident that Russia will be able to become the leader in the medal standings. Only 13% see Chinese athletes first and 12% see the US first.

It is expected that 10-12 thousand fans from Russia will come to the Rio Olympics, despite very expensive air tickets (a flight from Moscow and back will cost about 250 thousand rubles). The cheapest tickets for the Rio Olympics cost 14 euros, the most expensive - 420 euros. The cost of tickets for the opening ceremony starts from 1000 euros.

The mascots of the Brazilian Olympics, named Tom and Vinicius, deserve special attention. Collective images of the local fauna and flora - one looks like a cat, the other - an exotic flower - were named after famous Brazilian musicians of the last century: Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Jobim.

25,000 accredited media representatives will work at the 2016 Olympics, more than 5 billion people intend to follow the competition live. By the way, the duration of the live broadcast will exceed 5600 hours. 47,000 police officers and 38,000 military personnel will maintain order and provide security.

How Brazil prepared for the 2016 Olympics

The budget for the Olympic Games in Rio was originally $7.2 billion, but as the preparatory work was carried out, it increased to $9.8 billion: private companies that were engaged in the construction of Olympic facilities were involved in a corruption scandal, which ultimately led to even the resignation of the president.

Footage from the rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

In addition to the construction of the necessary Olympic facilities, Brazil has seriously "worked" to upgrade the infrastructure and strengthened security measures.

All competitions will be held in four zones: Barra, Deodoro, Maracana, Copacabana.

Barra has an Olympic village, an Olympic park, a press center, and a television center. There will be swimming and synchronized swimming, water polo and diving, sports and rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining, cycling, tennis, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, basketball, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, handball, golf.

In Deodoro (by the way, this is a former military base) they will compete in equestrian sports, modern pentathlon, fencing, rowing slalom, cycling and shooting.

The Maracana zone will not only host the opening and closing ceremonies, but will also host football competitions.

In Copacabana, where the world-famous sea beach of the same name is located, competitions related to water will be held: sailing, rowing, triathlon.

By the way, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games will start at a time when calendar winter is in South America and the air temperature ranges from +18 to +25 °C.
