British Formula 1 driver, driver of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team. Winner of the Lorenzo Bandini Prize and the Hawthorne Commemorative Trophy. Formula 1 champion of the 2009 season.

Jenson Button began his career in the 2000 season, speaking for the Williams team, spent his second season in the Benetton team, which was acquired by Renault in 2002 and received a new name - Renault F1. After two years with the Enstone team, he moved to BAR, which was later bought and renamed Honda. Button won his first Hungarian Grand Prix on 6 August 2006, after 13 races with his new team.

Following Honda's departure from Formula One in December 2008, he was left without a team for the 2009 season until Ross Brawn bought out the team's stake in February 2009, after which Button found himself behind the wheel of a competitive Mercedes-powered car. He scored six victories in the first seven races of the 2009 season, repeating the record of two other pilots: Michael Schumacher and Jim Clark. At the Brazilian Grand Prix, he built up a sufficient points lead to secure championship title and the Constructors' Championship for Brawn GP in its first and only season.

Button studied at Selwood high school and later at Frome Community College. He is the son of Simon Lyons and ex-racer rallycross by John Button from London (in the 1970s he was known in the UK as the Colorado Beetle because of his Volkswagen Beetle, the best results of which were second places in the Embassy / RAC-MSA British Rallycross championship and TEAC / Lydden Rallycross" in 1976). Jenson's parents divorced, and he also has three older sisters.

Racing career

Button started karting at the age of eight, after his father bought him his first kart and Jenson had an unusually successful start to his career. He won all 34 races of the 1991 British Karting Championship, along with the title. His successes continued, including triumphant performance in open championship UK karting. In 1997, he became the youngest driver in history to win the European Super-A championship and the Ayrton Senna Memorial Cup while preparing to drive a car.

At 18, Button takes part in British Formula Ford with the Haywood Racing team and wins the title with nine wins. He also triumphed at the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, ahead of future Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Weldon. In late 1998, he won the annual McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award. Part of this award was the testing of the McLaren car, which he conducted at the end of the following year. He was seen by the entire Formula 1 paddock, and the reporter met the talking Button and Ross Brown, who said to Jenson: “I hope to see you again,” to which the young Briton replied: “You will see me again.”

Button moved to British Formula Three in 1999 where he raced with the Promatecme team. He won three times: at Truxton, Pembry and Silverstone, and ended the season as best newcomer. He was third in the championship, losing only to Mark Hines and Luciano Burti, and also finished fifth and second respectively in the off-challenge Formula 3 Masters and Macau Grand Prix (0.035 seconds behind Darren Manning).

2000: Williams

In late 1999, Button did a prize test for McLaren at Silverstone and also tested the Prost team's car. The vacancy was a place in the Williams team, in connection with the departure of Alessandro Zanardi. Frank Williams organized a competition for this place between Button and International Formula 3000 driver Bruno Junqueira. The place was won by the Button, but he learned about it only fifteen minutes before the presentation of the car.

In the first race of the season, at the Australian Grand Prix, he could score points but retired with an engine failure. His best qualifying of the season came at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps where he qualified third and finished fifth. He made several mistakes during the season, the most notable of which was at Monza. When the safety car left the track, instead of slowing down (in order to let go of the safety car), he accelerated and crashed into a protective barrier. He finished the season in eighth position in the drivers' standings and lost to more experienced teammate Ralf Schumacher, who scored 24 points to Button's 12. By the end of the season, Button's performance improved, especially on the drying tracks at Hockenheim and Indianapolis, as well as on one of the most difficult tracks in the championship - Suzuka.

2001: Benetton

In 2001, despite a contract with Williams, Button became the pilot of the Benetton team, which was bought by Renault. The season turned out to be inexpressive; despite promises that the car would be competitive, it turned out to be slow, and Button himself was crushed by teammate Giancarlo Fisichella. best result Briton was fifth at the German Grand Prix, which gave him a disappointing seventeenth place in the personal score. Because of such an abyss of losing to a partner, he received the nickname "playboy" from the British press.

2002: Renault

In 2002, Renault renamed Benetton to Renault F1. Although his team mate Jarno Trulli was often ahead of the Brit in qualifying, Button had a faster pace in the races. He was close to third place (and his first podium) at the Malaysian Grand Prix, but was overtaken on the last lap by Michael Schumacher due to suspension problems in the Brit's Renault car, and ended up finishing fourth. At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Button had another fourth place and ended the season in seventh position in the drivers' standings, ten points ahead of his teammate.

For the 2003 season, Renault team principal Flavio Briatore replaced Button with Fernando Alonso, who was the team's test driver. Despite "huge protests," Briatore said, "time will tell if I'm wrong." In 2005, Alonso won the drivers' standings with Renault, while he had yet to win and was involved in his second contract dispute in two years. The Times newspaper quoted Briatore as saying: "Jenson is a great driver, but he has too many contracts and other distractions from racing."

2003-2005: BAR

After leaving Renault, in early 2003, Button joined the BAR team, where he became teammate former champion world - Jacques Villeneuve. With the course of the season, Jenson added to qualifying and racing. The best result of the season was the fourth place in Austria. However, it was not without problems, he had a severe accident during Saturday's free practice session in Monaco, and because of this he had to miss the race and the next test session in Monza. But by the end of the season, things improved and at the US Grand Prix, Button led the race for the first time. He finished this year ninth, eleven points ahead of his more experienced partner.

Button and BAR-Honda made significant progress in 2004, with the team finishing second in the Constructors' Championship. Button made his first podium finish by finishing third at the Malaysian Grand Prix. In just a season, he was on the podium nine times. Button and BAR took their first pole position in April at the San Marino Grand Prix in which he finished second. In the final standings, Button finished third (the best of his career at the time) with 85 points, behind only two dominant Ferrari drivers.

Despite his success with BAR, Button announced on August 5, 2004 that he had signed a two-year contract with Williams, igniting a new contract conflict. BAR chief David Richards defended the rights to the pilot, although Frank Williams argued that the transfer was legal. On October 16, a hearing was held in Milan by the FIA Contractual Compliance Board, which determined the state of affairs of the Button in 2005, which consists in the fact that he will hold it with the BAR-Honda team.

The 2005 season began in an unenviable way. At the San Marino Grand Prix, the team was disqualified. Chapter technical team FIA Joe Bauer discovered an additional reservoir in the fuel tank that allowed the car to weigh more than the required minimum, despite the fact that during the race the car weighed less and did not meet the regulations. The foul resulted in a ban from the next two races, allowing Button to make his debut as a commentator on ITV Sport in Monaco. Button took second pole position in Montreal. However, he had a poor start and crashed into the "wall of champions" on lap 46 while in third position. Despite failing to score in the first half of the season, things improved towards the end of the season. After finishing in fourth position in France, Button got second place at the start (after Kimi Raikkonen's penalty) at the home Grand Prix at Silverstone. But he had a weak start and, coupled with a poor pace, finished only fifth. Button with enviable regularity showed nice results in Hockenheim and 2005 was no exception. He qualified second at the German Grand Prix and finished third, his first podium of the season.

In 2005 Button again became the subject of a contract conflict. On September 21, 2005, the BAR team confirmed that Button would spend the 2006 season with them (purchasing the contract from Williams for $30 million), where he partnered with ex-Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello.

2006-2008: Honda

In October 2005, the BAR-Honda team was bought out by Honda and became a full factory team, changing its name to the Honda Racing F1 Team. There were ups and downs in the 2006 season - Button had an inexpressive home Grand Prix, but won his first victory in Hungary.

The first part of the season turned out to be difficult: in the first stage, he earned five points for fourth place and finished on the podium in Malaysia. In Australia, he took his third pole, but was passed in the first corner by Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen after leaving the safety car and was in fifth until his engine exploded in the last corner of the last lap. The Briton stopped near the finish line to avoid a fine for changing the engine. At his home race at Silverstone, he qualified 19th due to a loss of time weighing the car, and the team was unable to return him to the track in time. The race also did not go well for the Briton, who was turned around in turn eight due to an oil leak from the engine.

2009: Brawn GP

On March 5, 2009, it was announced that the Honda team would become Brawn GP, which was bought out by Ross Brawn, the previous head of Honda Racing F1. Button and Rubens Barrichello were confirmed as the team's main drivers for the 2009 season.

Button took pole position at the Australian Grand Prix, the team's first and fourth of his career, and his team mate started with him from the front row. Button led for the first time from start to finish, ahead of his partner and the team for the first time since 1954 in the debut race finished double.

A week later, he secured a second pole position and a straight win at the Malaysian Grand Prix, setting the fastest lap of the race for the first time in his career in order to get ahead of Jarno Trulli and Nico Rosberg, who had passed him at the start, during the first refueling. The race was stopped due to heavy rain, and as less than 75% of the race distance was completed, only half the points were awarded. In this race, Button for the first time became the owner of a hat-trick (pole, victory and fastest lap).

At the rainy Chinese Grand Prix, Button finished third behind Pilots Red Bull Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Button won the fourth race of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix, starting fourth, ahead of Vettel and Trulli, who started from pole; it was the first time of the season that he had seen the checkered flag waved at race speed.

After the meeting of the World Motor Sports Council, which confirmed plans to reduce the budgets of teams in 2010, Button was one of the first to support this idea.

After the first updates to the 2009 car in Barcelona, Button took pole again despite complaining about the balance of the chassis. He won his fourth race, one of the factors of victory was the transition of a partner to the tactics of three pit stops, who was in the lead, but after the pit stop was behind.

2010: McLaren

Following the sale of the Brawn team to Mercedes, on November 18, 2009, Button announced his resignation from the team to eight Constructors' Cup winning team McLaren for the 2010 season. He reportedly signed a three-year contract, and for each season will receive six million dollars, and his partner will be 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton. In an interview with the BBC, Button said he moved to McLaren because he was looking for new challenge, despite the fact that the Brawn GP team offered more money, he wanted more motivation and a fight with Lewis Hamilton.

After finishing in seventh position at the season-opening race in Bahrain, Button won the second race of the season in Australia. Despite colliding with Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher in the first turn, he took a chance and switched to slicks before other riders. This decision later turned out to be correct, his pace was the fastest, and he went much faster than those who went to intermediate type rubber. After the departure of Sebastian Vettel due to problems with the brakes, the lead passed to the Briton, and he confidently reached the finish line in first position, twelve seconds ahead of the closest pursuer Robert Kubica.

After the Brazilian Grand Prix, Jenson Button lost the opportunity to become the owner of the 2010 championship title.

2011: McLaren

Because of the unrest in Bahrain, the first race was held in Australia - where he finished sixth. The first podium finish of the season was in the second race - second place at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The next two Asian stages were not so successful - 4th and 6th places in China and Turkey, respectively. But at the next two, the European Grand Prix, Spain and Monaco, passing with a difference of only a week, Button occupied the bottom step of the podium. The first victory of the year took place in Canada, where Jenson was able to win, being at a certain point in the race on last place and six times (the most) changing tires. After this race, Jenson climbed into individual classification championship for second place. This race was his 100th finish in the points zone, and in this indicator he caught up with Nelson Piquet. On June 26, 2011, out of 27 races for the team from Woking, Jenson did not get into the points for only three (two retirements and one 12th place). After two retirements for technical reasons (loose wheel nut in England and hydraulic failure in Germany), Button won his 200th race in Hungary, repeating his success of five years ago. After that, due to the team's mistake in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, he started only from the second ten, but brilliantly ran the race and came out in 3rd place. This was followed by two second places at the Italian Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix. Moreover, in Singapore, having shown a fast lap in the last laps, he did not allow Vettel to win the first in his career " Grand slam". On the eve of the Japanese Grand Prix, the Briton extended his multi-year contract with the British stable. Two weeks later, Jenson brilliantly won the race in Suzuka, starting from second place. In the race for some time, Vettel was confidently leading, as well as Massa, Alonso and even Schumacher, but starting from 41 laps (out of 53), Jenson went to his twelfth victory, and the jubilee, fortieth podium. AT last four racing Jenson Button only once failed to climb the podium. The season ended at the Brazilian Grand Prix, where Jenson became vice-champion in 2011 and was 43 points ahead of his partner Lewis Hamilton. Last season, Button was on the podium 12 times (with two technical retirements), which is personal record for the pilot.

Brief biography of Jenson Button (UK)

It took nine years in the royal racing circuit before Jenson Button fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a Formula 1 world champion. His talent and perseverance were tested several times during his Formula 1 career, but the result was a World Champion award and a long-term contract with the team McLaren. On the this moment Jenson Button is one of the most respected and respected pilots in the paddock.

In 1989, he first sat behind the wheel of a racing kart, the first attempt was quite successful, he won his debut Grand Prix. He started his path to great things from a very early age, at the very beginning of his career he won the title of karting champion in 1990. In 1997, continuing to participate in karting championships, he won the Ayrton Senna Cup at the Suzuka circuit, and became the youngest winner of the European Super Karting Championship. His skill was evident, even in the days of karting he was revered by his eminent contemporaries and Anthony Davidson.

British Formula Ford, which became for Jenson Button next step in a career, was conquered in debut season. 1998 was a very successful year for Jenson, he wins nine British Formula Grand Prix, speaking for the Haywood Racing team. These victories brought him the title of champion. In the same year, he also takes part in the European Formula Ford, where he takes second place. At the Formula Ford Festival championship, Button finishes first. All these victories bring him fame in the racing community, he receives the prestigious McLaren Young Driver of the Year Award. His career developed so rapidly that it seemed that he - big fish in a small pond.

His next victim was British Formula 3. Here, in 1999, he takes third place, winning three races and having been on the podium seven more times. Such good results gave him the opportunity to test Formula 1 cars. First, then Prost.

He is offered several contracts as a test pilot. But Frank Williams is breaking the public peace of the paddock by signing the 20-year-old driver to a 2000 prime pilot contract. Jenson scores 12 points and takes eighth place in the standings. AT next year he is changed to Jauna-Pablo Mantoya, but Jenson does not despair and goes to Benetton. 2001 turned out to be a difficult year for Button, the car was not competitive, he managed to earn only two points in the entire championship. Naturally, the more experienced partner Giancarlo Fisichella outshines the Briton.

In 2002, Benetton turns into Renault, and Jenson takes seventh place in the Pilots' Cup. In 2003, protege Flavio Briatore was taken to replace Jenson. But the BAR team, led by David Richards, clearly saw an excellent pilot in Button, so they offered him a contract. So Jenson became a partner of Jacques Villeneuve, whom he managed to surpass. In the championship, Jenson is ninth, he scores almost three times more points than Jacques.

In the 2004 season, the Honda team buys part of the BAR team and Jenson's team is now called BAR-Honda. Jacques Villeneuve is replaced by Takumo Sato, and the Englishman becomes the first number of the team. In the same year, the Button for the first time rises to the podium, more precisely, this happens to him 10 times. Having won the first pole in his career at Imola, the young Briton concedes in the championship only to the dominant Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. The team remembers their protégé and they begin negotiations with BAR-Honda, but Jenson still remains with the Japanese team for 2005. Many then argued for a long time about whether he did the right thing, but still the most important issue was the results of the performance young talent, everyone was at a loss: “How is it, 114 races and not one victory?”

And finally, the time has come for the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. An unexpected downpour covered the Hungaroring with a thick blanket, the track had to overtake and Jenson was able to make his way from 14th position at the start to first place at the finish line. So Jenson Button won his first the highest level podium of honor.

Despite the victory, the worst was yet to come. Honda released two mediocre cars in 2007 and 2008. Both seasons have been difficult for the Button, he fails to earn many points, he remains in the middle standings. At the end of 2008, leaving Jenson without a team, Honda leaves Formula 1. In some strange way, the Button ends up in the Brown team. With quiet glanders, he wins six of the first seven grand prix, and wins the title of World Champion in 2009.

At the end of the year, Jenson Button moves to McLaren, joining Lewis Hamilton and thus creating the British dream team. For abandoning the championship team, a stream of criticism rained down on him. According to skeptics, he moved to McLaren, where he immediately took second place to please Hamilton. But two victories at the beginning of the season silenced the evil tongues.

In 2011, Button finally stepped out of the shadow of Lewis Hamilton and took the lead. This year he was the only serious competitor who opposed the German in the second half of the season. Of the last nine races, he wins three and takes the podium in eight more. The highlight of the program was the Japanese Grand Prix, in which he was ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso in a dry. As a result, he finished second in the championship with 270 points, and, not least, became the first team-mate of Hamilton, who was ahead of the dark-skinned comet.

Button started 2012 by winning the Australian Grand Prix, but midway through the season, the McLaren team got lost in a huge number of problems. The chances for the title were slowly fading away, but Jenson still managed to soak the score by winning at the legendary Spa Francocham circuit in Belgium and in the final race in Brazil. This gave him confidence that he was ready to lead the team and lead it into battle in 2013.

Button set a record, in three years of working together with Lewis, he was ahead of his partner, earning 672 points against 657 points from Hamilton. But he was unable to pull off the hideous 2013 McLaren car. For the first time since 1980, the team has never reached the podium. Perhaps one of the reasons was the confrontation with the young partner Sergeo Perez. However, Jenson still won their confrontation, ahead of Sergeo in the championship and taking a disappointing ninth place in the drivers' cup.

2014 was an intriguing year for McLaren and Jenson himself, because in the new season Kevin Magnussen, a young and talented Dane, became his partner. But the Button is not the first time to fight with the strong and the best. He is third in Australia. In 13 stages of the season, he scores points. As a result, he is the eighth in overall standings three places higher than his young partner.

Quotes

When asked to choose the best of the Mansell-Piquet pair, he replied: “Mansell. Because I like this guy and he has a big mustache, at least he definitely had one.

Jenson Button started his career in the season 2000 year, playing for the Williams team, spent his second season in the Benetton team, which in 2002 was acquired by Renault and received a new name - Renault F1. After two years with the Enstone team, he moved to BAR, which was later bought and renamed Honda. Button won his first Hungarian Grand Prix on 6 August 2006 year, after 13 races for his new team.

After Honda's departure from Formula 1 in December 2008 year, he was left without a team for the season- 2009 until Ross Brawn bought out the team in February 2009 year, after which Button was behind the wheel of a competitive car equipped with a Mercedes engine.

He took six wins in the first seven races of the season. 2009 , repeating the record of two other pilots: Michael Schumacher and Jim Clark. At the Brazilian Grand Prix, he built up a sufficient points lead to secure the championship title and the Constructors' Championship for the Brawn GP team in its only season.

After the sale of the Brawn team to the Mercedes concern, November 18 2009 Button announced his departure from the team for the team that won eight Constructors' Cups - McLaren for performances in the season 2010 of the year. He reportedly signed a three-year contract and for each season will receive six million dollars, and his partner will be a champion 2008 Years of Lewis Hamilton. In an interview with the BBC, Button said that he moved to McLaren because he was looking for a new challenge, despite the fact that the Brawn GP team offered more money, he wanted more motivation and a fight with Lewis Hamilton.

After finishing in seventh position at the season-opening race in Bahrain, Button won the second race of the season in Australia. Despite colliding with Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher in the first turn, he took a chance and switched to slicks before other riders. This decision later turned out to be correct, his pace was the fastest and he went much faster than those who walked on the intermediate type of rubber. After the departure of Sebastian Vettel due to problems with the brakes, the lead passed to the Briton and he confidently reached the finish line in first position, twelve seconds ahead of the closest pursuer Robert Kubica.

Due to unrest in Bahrain, the first race was held in Australia - where he finished sixth. The first podium finish of the season was in the second race - second place at the Malaysian GP. The next two Asian stages were not so successful - 4th and 6th places in China and Turkey, respectively. But at the next two, the European Grand Prix, Spain and Monaco, passing with a difference of only a week, Button took two 3rd places. For June 26 2011 of the 27 races held for the team from Woking, Jenson did not get into the points for only three (two retirements and one 12th place). After two retirements for technical reasons (a loose wheel nut in England and a hydraulic failure in Germany), Jenson Button won his 200th race in Hungary, repeating his five-year-old success. After that, due to a team error in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, he started only from the second ten, but he brilliantly ran the race and came out in 3rd place.

This was followed by two second places at the Italian Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix. Moreover, in Singapore, having shown a fast lap in the last laps, he did not allow Vettel to win the first Grand Slam in his career. On the eve of the Japanese Grand Prix, the Briton extended his multi-year contract with the British stable. Two weeks later, Jenson brilliantly won the race in Suzuka, starting from second place. In the race for some time, Vettel was confidently leading, as well as Massa, Alonso and even Schumacher, but starting from the 41st lap (out of 53), Jenson went to his 12th victory, and the jubilee, 40th podium.
