Bodybuilders 90. Bodybuilders. Just huge jocks

Bodybuilding legends - in youth and now.

The end of the 60s and 70s of the last century can be called the Golden Age of bodybuilding. During this period of time body-building developed rapidly, quickly gaining popularity in America and around the world. This happened, among other things, thanks to such legends of the world bodybuilding -Arnie, Larry Scott, Sergio Oliva and etc.
It is interesting to trace what has become of the bodybuilding stars now. During their youth, they were in perfect physical shape. What happened to them after 40 years?
Larry Scott- American athlete, went down in history as the first winner of the most prestigious tournament among professional bodybuilders Mr. Olympia.

He won this title 2 times in 1965 and 1966. Was born Larry Scott in 1938 in America. Larry did not have the best physique to become a bodybuilder - wide hips and narrow shoulders. Today, due to fierce competition, it is almost impossible to achieve any success in professional bodybuilding with such natural data. But in the 60s of the last century, thanks to intensive training and perseverance, Larry managed to climb to the top of Olympus.
In recent years, Larry lived in Utah, USA. He was the owner of a company specializing in the sale of fitness products. If you look at his photo today, you can see that he was in great physical shape. In fact, he himself is an advertisement for his company.
But unfortunately no one is eternal and on March 8, 2014 Larry passed away. He died at the age of 75 from Alzheimer's disease.

They say that the secret of his athletic longevity is that he never took steroids, that is, he always had a natural increase in muscle mass.

Cuban Sergio Oliva - Mr. Olympia sample 1967 - 1969. In 1969, he defeated the then young Arnold Schwarzenegger. In his youth, Sergio was involved in weightlifting and at the age of 21 he already entered the Cuban national team in this sport, then immigrated to the United States and seriously took up bodybuilding. The strength training of the weightlifter helped him become the best bodybuilder on the planet in just four years.

But in 1970, Sergio had to move - he was defeated by the great Arnie, after which for 6 years Schwarzenegger did not give way to anyone on Olympus. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to regain the title of the best bodybuilder, Oliva stopped participating in competitions and took up coaching. Sergio successfully combined his career as a bodybuilder with police service, where he worked as an officer for more than 25 years.

Today he is no longer with us, he died on November 12, 2012 at the age of 72 from kidney failure. Of course, it can be assumed that the disease that caused the death of the athlete was the result of taking anabolic steroids, which bodybuilders in the 70s took in huge quantities, without thinking about the consequences. In those days, steroids were also prescribed to ordinary people, for example, to recover from an illness. Nevertheless, Sergio Oliva lived a long interesting life and entered the world bodybuilding hall of fame. And only God knows when and from what each specific person, whether it be a former professional athlete or an ordinary citizen, sticks his flippers together.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and today is considered the best bodybuilder in history bodybuilding. Arnie has achieved success not only in sports but also in business, politics and of course in cinema. Arnold is the embodiment of the proverbial American Dream. In the 70s, he was an idol for everyone involved in bodybuilding, and thanks in large part to him, the popularity of this sport increased.

Schwarzenegger became Mr. Olympia 7 times, from 1970 to 1975 and in 1980. True, many consider his victory in 1980 undeserved. The fact is that in 1975 Arnold left big sport and went into business and a career in Hollywood, and, as it seemed to him, they began to forget about him as a bodybuilder. In 1980, he unexpectedly decided to compete for the title and prove to everyone who is the king here! Evil tongues said that during his absence, the level of training of athletes has increased markedly and Arnie was inferior to them. In addition, Schwarzenegger had a lot of weight in the lucrative bodybuilding industry and could influence the decision of the judges. Like it or not - you decide. Look at the photos from the 1980 competition and draw your own conclusions.

Apparently, years of exhausting training and packaging of anabolics did their job - at the age of 50, Arnold underwent heart surgery and today he bears little resemblance to the Terminator, but what to do - the recipe for eternal youth has not yet been invented and is unlikely to ever be invented. Even the most outstanding athlete sooner or later turns into an old man.

In 1976, the title of Mr. Olympia was won by a close friend of Arnold - an athlete of Italian origin. . Franco was a talented bodybuilder, but he was hampered by a natural flaw - his height was only 165 cm. In modern bodybuilding, it is almost impossible to win a prestigious competition with such growth. Now the public is eager to see tall, massive athletes on the pedestal, while in the 70s, symmetry, proportionality and beauty of the body were primarily valued. It is also possible that Franco's friendship with Arnie, who played an important role in the bodybuilding industry, played a role.
In 1977, Franco Colombo competed in the competition for the title - The strongest man in the world and actually won them. An injury prevented him from winning the final victory. He received $1 million in compensation. After the injury, the doctors advised the bodybuilder to quit the sport, but the athlete continues to swing and in 1981 Franco again becomes Mr. Olympia.

In young age Colombo was engaged boxing, so you can imagine how strong the blow of a professional boxer was, multiplied by the blow of the strongest man in the world. One day Franco, his wife and two friends were attacked by a group of thugs with chains. One of the attackers attacked Colombo - the hooligan was apparently misled by his not big growth, but Franco outstripped him and delivered a lightning-fast blow to the jaw, from which the entire lower part of the bully's face stopped in a bloody mess. Naturally, the surviving American gopniks fled in horror.
And today, the physical form of Franco Colombo is respected. We wish the great athlete long life and health.

Frank Zane probably the most “slender” Mr. Olympia in the history of this tournament. He was born in 1942 in America. Arnold Schwarzenegger, being a rival of this bodybuilder, once in an interview contemptuously called him a chicken. Nevertheless, Frank ascended Olympus. He was more Apollo than Hercules. With a height of 175 cm, his weight was 85 kg, and his biceps were only 45 cm. For comparison, the competitive weight of Arnold Schwarzenegger was about 107 kg, the volume of the biceps was 56 cm. Apparently, that is why that time is considered the golden age of bodybuilding - then a bodybuilder with ideal proportions could win, muscle relief, with a graceful, symmetrical and almost perfect body, perhaps even to the detriment of a huge muscle mass. Apparently such athletes posed for sculptors in ancient Greece.

Frank won the Mr. Olympia title from 1977 to 1979. After another victory Frank Zane gave an interview to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who at that moment was considered a coryphaeus, a veteran, a wedding general of bodybuilding, where he had the imprudence to recall the tournament of the end 60s, where Zane defeated young Arnold. According to Frank Zane, Arnold unexpectedly took part in the Mr. Olympia tournament in 1980 year precisely because of this interview.
For many years, Frank Zane combined bodybuilding with work. teachers. He taught chemistry and mathematics and did scientific work! This fact debunks the myth that all bodybuilders are dumb jocks with two convolutions.
And today the physique is far from young Frank give odds to many young men.
