Olympics in Brazil. When will the Olympic Games start in Rio de Janeiro?

The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro from 5 to 17 August has a lot of surprises in store for sports fans: this year we have several events that will take place within the framework of the Olympic Games for the first time.

In particular, the 2016 Olympics itself will be held in South America for the first time - since the beginning of the 21st century, no Olympic Games have been held in the southern hemisphere of our planet. But the locations of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are not the only surprise, in the summer of 2016 a record number of countries will compete for a record number of medals.

The editors found out which sports fans will have a chance to watch at the 2016 Olympics in Rio: athletes are expected to compete in 35 major summer sports.

Sports at the 2016 Olympics

Traditionally, the Summer Olympics will be held not only on land, but also on water: athletes will have to pass tests from rowing to judo, and from different types of swimming to golf.

Water sports

The most spectacular at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, of course, will be water sports. One of the main water sports of the Olympic Games is rowing- in fact, this is a group race on the water in boats. It is noteworthy that only same-sex teams of athletes can participate in this race at the Olympics, while at other championships the gender of rowers and helmsmen may differ.

A set of medals will also be played within the framework of water polo- collective ball game on the water. This sport has absorbed the best aspects of rugby, and for the first time athletes played such a game in England at the end of the 19th century. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, athletes will play on a rectangular water court in teams of seven.

Since 1936, athletes have had to compete in a single sport - canoeing and kayaking. Differences in rowing on these types of "water transport" are that when rowing in a kayak, the athlete sits, while in rowing in a canoe, the rower is forced to stand on one knee.

Rowing slalom- Another sport in which Olympic athletes will compete. According to the rules, the athletes will be forced to navigate in the boat the "obstacle course" they will encounter while rafting down the river with mountainous areas. White water can also be used as a location for rowing slalom.

Yachtsmen in the framework of the 2016 Olympic Games will compete in sailing. Since 1909, this sport has been included in the program of the Olympic Games, this year it provides for a triangular Olympic track and courts of nine classes.

The traditional sport of the Olympics is swimming- Athletes will play sets of medals, overcoming distances of 50-1500 meters in a special style. In particular, at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, athletes will swim in freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke.

Since 1904, the program of the Olympic Games has included diving- Athletes demonstrate their skills by jumping from various springboards, which differ from each other in the length of the tower and the springboard itself. At the 2016 Olympics, athletes in each category of jumps will have 5 attempts to complete the perfect jump, the jury will credit the athlete with the best jump.

A particularly spectacular sport of the Olympics will be synchronized swimming in which female athletes compete. It may seem that this is the easiest sport, but during synchronized swimming women will demonstrate the ability to move through the water on their side, back and chest, this movement is carried out both in a vertical and horizontal position.

Other sports at the 2016 Olympics

Other sports will be presented at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Participants of the Olympiad will compete in game skills, demonstrate wrestling skills in various styles and show first-class shooting from several types of weapons.

In 2016 the program includes:

  • Badminton;
  • Boxing;
  • Basketball;
  • Struggle;
  • Volleyball;
  • Cycling;
  • Golf;
  • Handball;
  • Athletics;
  • Judo;
  • Horseback Riding;
  • Beach volleyball;
  • Table tennis;

  • Archery;

  • Football.

Official sources specify that the IOC has included a simplified version of rugby - rugby-7 - in the list of Olympic competitions this year. Golf was also included in the program, which has not been an Olympic sport for a long time.

The preparations for the 2016 Games are the worst I have ever seen... But we have no other plan B. So we're going to Rio.

Vice President of the IOC

Summer Olympic Games in 2016 - the main sporting event of the four years The Olympic movement originated in ancient Greece. Then it was both a sporting and religious event. But after 394 AD. competition fell under the disgrace of the authorities.

Only at the end of the 19th century the Games were resumed. Since then, since 1986, 22 Winter and 30 Summer Olympics have taken place in the world. The next Summer Olympic Games 2016 will be held in Brazil. This is the first Olympics in South America.

Choice of the host country and problems of organization

Eight countries have applied to host the Games. In addition to Brazil, Azerbaijan, Spain, the Czech Republic, Qatar, Japan, the USA and Russia fought for the right to host the Games. Three countries indicated in their applications cities that were not their capitals. These were: Russia (St. Petersburg), USA (Chicago) and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). St. Petersburg withdrew the application, because a month and a half after the application was submitted, another city (Sochi) received the right to host the 2014 Winter Games.

Four applicants got to the final part of the race: Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago and Rio de Janeiro. Voting took place in three stages. With each of them, one applicant was eliminated. As a result, there were only two left: Rio de Janeiro and Madrid.

With a double advantage during the final vote in October 2009, Rio de Janeiro won. In 2014, information appeared that the venue for the 2016 Summer Olympics could be changed. The reason for the rumors was the frequent statements by IOC officials about non-compliance by the host country with the deadlines for the delivery of facilities for competitions.

The media considered London, which hosted the competition in 2012, and Moscow as an alternative to hosting the Games. But despite problems with the organization, IOC officials said that the Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, and there is no talk of postponing the competition.

The Brazilians, after the approval of the candidacy of Rio de Janeiro, decided that the 2016 Summer Olympics will be held on the territory of four zones of the city.

  • Athletics;
  • marathon;
  • archery;
  • football;
  • water polo;
  • volleyball.

Maracana will become the main object of the Olympics. The stadium of the same name will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games. Also, the stadium "Maracana" will host the final match of the Olympic football tournament. It is the largest sports ground in Brazil with a capacity of 79,000 people.

The Joao Havelange and Maracanazinho stadiums adjacent to the Maracanã will host athletics and volleyball competitions, respectively. The João Havelange Olympic Stadium is new (commissioned in 2007) and can accommodate 45,000 people.

The Maracanazinho stadium has a capacity of 12,000 people. The stadium was built in 1954 and has gone through two renovations. The last one was in 2007. One of the main attractions of the Maracanã area will also host part of the Olympics competitions. We are talking about the famous Sambodrome street, where the Brazilian carnival takes place every year. The street has a length of 700 meters, and on the sides it is fenced off by spectator stands. Their capacity is 90,000 people.

Archery competitions will be held at the Sambadrome. Here will be the start and finish of the women's and men's marathons.

Not only Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Four more Brazilian cities will host competitions as part of the Olympics. The most capacious is the Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia (76,000 people). This is followed by the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte (74,000), Morumbi in Sao Paulo (66,000) and Fonte Nava Arena in Salvador (60,000).

Mascot and logo of the Games

The talisman of the future Olympics was an animal named Vinicius and a plant named Tom. Both mascots represent the diverse flora and fauna of Brazil. Vinicius is the epitome of all the animals that live in Brazil, "born from an explosion of joy" that the country was chosen as the capital of the Olympics. The volume personifies the symbol of the Paralympic Games and is a mixture of plants.

The theme of the Brazilian flag is clearly traced in the colors of the mascots. The official logo of the Olympics is an image of three dancing human figures in orange, green and blue. They all hold hands. Below is the inscription "RIO 2016" and the symbol of all the Olympic Games - five rings connected to each other.

301 medals in 40 sports disciplines will be played at the Olympics. For the first time, rugby sevens, which is a simplified form of this game, was included in the program of the Summer Games. Also, for the first time since 1904, a golf tournament will be held at the Summer Olympics. This sport was once excluded from the Olympics, but by decision of the IOC, by voting in 2009, this status was returned to it.

Otherwise, the 2016 Summer Olympics will follow the same sports program as the previous Olympics.

The well-known Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva plans to perform in Rio de Janeiro. Elena twice became the champion of the Olympic Games (2004 and 2008). After a bronze podium at the 2012 London Olympics, she announced that she was suspending her sports career and would make a final decision on performance at the next Games later.

The American swimmer, 18-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps, who retired in 2012 and returned to sports in 2014, intends to take part in the Games in Brazil, setting the 2016 Summer Olympics as his goal.

Going to the Olympics as a Volunteer

To do this, you need to register on the official website of the Games and submit an application. In May 2015, casting began at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games. It will run until November 2015. During this period, interviews will take place, following which, in November 2015, there will be a meeting of the participants with the artistic group, which will select the most liked applicants with an invitation in April 2016 to Brazil for rehearsal events.

Participants must be at least 16 years of age as of April 1, 2016. The ticket to Brazil is paid by the volunteer himself.

Tickets for the competition went on sale at the beginning of 2015. So, the price of tickets for the Olympic Games in Brazil ranges from 17 to 1300 dollars. For the opening ceremony, the cheapest tickets cost $57 or BRL 200 depending on the exchange rate.

The most expensive tickets (1,200 reais or $341) will be sold for athletics and volleyball competitions, the cheapest (40 reais or $11) for open water swimming, field hockey, shooting, weightlifting and race walking.

All tickets can be purchased through the online portal "Rio 2016 Tickets" after registration. There are no direct flights between Russia and Brazil. Direct flights to Galleon Airport can be reached from airports in Europe. These can be: Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, London and Istanbul.

A trip to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will require a large financial outlay for at least one flight, but despite the financial side of the issue and the initial problems with the organization, the 2016 Summer Olympics promise to be the grandest sporting event of the year, which is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime .

The Russian team is still admitted to the Olympic Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in August. For three weeks, all sports fans will be chained to TV screens to watch new records and victories. Everything you need to know about the main sporting event of the four years, which will be held in South America for the first time, read in our material.

When will the Olympic Games be held in Brazil?

The XXXI Summer Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro from 5 to 21 August. At the same time, not only Rio will be involved in the Olympics. Thus, the football tournament will be held in four more cities of the country: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Salvador and Sao Paulo. The upcoming Games will be the first in South America and the second in Latin America since the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Now the only region where the Olympic flame has not yet been lit is Africa. It seems to be a matter of time.

How did Rio de Janeiro become the host of the Olympics?

Voting for the capital began in 2007. Eight cities have applied to host the XXXI Summer Olympic Games: Baku (Azerbaijan), Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Spain), Prague (Czech Republic), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Tokyo (Japan), Chicago (USA) and Saint-Petersburg, Russia). But due to the fact that Russia received the right to host the Winter Games in Sochi, the Northern capital of Russia withdrew its application.

Rio, Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago advanced to the final for the final vote. The choice of the capital took place in Copenhagen (Denmark) at the 121st session of the IOC on October 2, 2009. Voting took place in the maximum number of rounds - three. In a bitter struggle, the Brazilian city overtook Madrid by a margin of only a few dozen votes.

Note that Rio de Janeiro applied to host the 1936, 1940, 2004 and 2012 Summer Olympics. In early 2014, the International Olympic Committee expressed concern about the delay in the construction of facilities intended for the Games. The possible option of transferring the Olympic Games to London, which already hosted the competition in 2012, was discussed, but it did not come to that.

The competition will take place during the calendar winter in South America. The temperature during this period ranges from +18 to +25 °C. The time difference between Barnaul and Rio de Janeiro is 10 hours. So it will be very difficult to watch, unless, of course, you suffer from insomnia.

Who became the mascot of the Olympic Games?

The mascots of the competition were two animals, representing the flora and fauna of Brazil. Vinicius is represented as a yellow cat-like animal. Tom is a collective image of flora. This is a blue and green plant that has features of both a flower and a tree.

Where will the opening ceremony of the Olympics take place?

The organizers divided the competition venues into four zones: Barra, Deodoro, Maracana, Copacabana. It is at one of the most famous football stadiums in the world that the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as football competitions, will be held.

Notes
* – schedule according to Moscow time. Moscow time is indicated everywhere.

Note that broadcasts on the night of Moscow time in our schedule refer to the previous day. For example, competitions taking place in Moscow from August 6 to August 7 are indicated on August 6. In addition, the calendar shows the start time of the morning and evening competitive program.

Only 6 months have passed since the closing of the Olympic Games in Rio, and most of the Olympic venues are already falling apart. The reason is simple - the city does not have enough money to service them, it also fails to attract athletes and tourists there, so the entire Olympic Park is empty and abandoned. And given the crime that reigns in Brazil, it is not difficult to guess that in a year everything will be taken apart brick by brick. Already began to steal wiring, fire extinguishers and equipment.

In general, the Olympics are most often a big problem for the city. I have been to many former Olympic venues, very rarely they can be integrated into a quiet city life. Even in Moscow, numerous stadiums and sports facilities built for the Olympics-80 today look like foreign bodies in the urban environment.

I propose to walk around the Olympic Park in Rio and see what it looks like six months later.

This is the Maracana, the largest stadium in Brazil. In 2016, the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games were held here. And it was here that the football matches of the Olympics were played. Now the stadium is abandoned...

The reason is that the authorities, the organizers of the Olympics and the owners of the stadium could not agree on which of them will pay the almost one million dollar bill for electricity and maintenance of the facility. As a result, the power went out...

The stadium was not built from scratch. It has existed here since 1950, and in 2010-1012 it was simply restored. The restoration cost 400 million euros and was timed to coincide with the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The stadium saw little use during the 2016 Olympics. The last event was held here in December, it was a charity match. Since then, the stadium has been completely abandoned.

But even two months was enough... Vandals tore out thousands of seats.

Electronic scoreboards were stolen.

They tore the upholstery on the chairs. Although some hoped that things would be different. For example, here is a quote from Mauricio Santoro, a political scientist at the State University of Rio de Janeiro: "Maracana" is the main symbol of how the games are organized. Most people will never come to a golf course or other Olympic venues. But with "Maracana" everything is different. This is the jewel in the crown."

This is what the stadium looks like from the outside. Football Federation of Rio de Janeiro fears that it will only get worse. Formally, the stadium is the home arena for four football clubs, but they do not use it.

Olympic Water Stadium. Its façade was adorned with translucent canvases created by the Brazilian artist Adriana Varejo, now peeled and torn.

And the training pool is filled with rainwater, mud and dead insects.

And this is the Olympic golf course, in the arrangement of which 16 million euros have been invested. After the Olympics, the Brazilian Golf Confederation was unable to attract enough players. There is not enough money to maintain the facility.

Modular houses built for the Olympics on the golf course are now also abandoned.

On the fence around the sports complex, Deodoro sees an announcement: “We are closed for the duration of the pool renovation, we will be back in January. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!" In general, the area around Deodoro was going to be turned into a large park after the Olympics. But in December, the mayor's office terminated the contract with the company that was supposed to do this. Now the local Olympic Committee is looking for a new contractor who could take over the management of the sports complex.

This is the Carioca Arena, where competitions in basketball, fencing and martial arts were held.

And this is the Olympic Tennis Center. In early February, beach volleyball competitions were held here, and until that moment the facility was also abandoned.

Teresa Williamson, director of a non-governmental organization that supports people living in slums, believes that the Olympic Park is abandoned due to the general economic decline in the city: “Because of the Olympics, it was Rio that saw the fastest economic growth, and because now there is the most rapid decline. Absolutely everyone suffers losses.”

According to the residents of the city, the only positive thing left after the Olympics is the improvement of the public transport system. But it also affected only prosperous areas.

No country in the world has had successful cases of exploiting the Olympic heritage without a complete reconstruction. A normal city does not need so many sports facilities of this capacity. In London, for example, after the Olympics, the former Olympic Park began to be built up with housing, it was almost completely redone. In Sochi, the mountain cluster has turned into a resort, which is good. True, the railway line turned out to be unprofitable, and trains now run very rarely. It is quite possible that over time it will have to be dismantled, because after the Olympics it is not profitable to drive empty trains. But the problem with stadiums. Most of the time, the Olympic Park in Sochi is empty. The gigantic spaces filled with asphalt that were needed in 2014 are idle today. They are very expensive to maintain, and there is nothing to do. And the Olympic Park needs to be reconstructed, of course, otherwise it will continue to stand as a monument to the Olympics, sucking out a lot of money to maintain order.
