How to choose a bike so as not to regret the purchase. Bicycle Tips

– an affordable vehicle that does not harm the environment. Easy to store, maintainable at home, easy to use both in the park and on the road.

In this article, we will talk about how to choose the right types of bikes for height: children's, mountain, hybrid and road.

Height of a cyclist

Take a moment and measure your height without shoes. It is important to know your height in order to choose the right bike, taking into account its size.

Rostovka is the dimensions of bicycle frames in inches, centimeters or written in legend. Larger frame sizes (L, XL, XXL) are built from thicker-walled tubes to support the greater weight of a taller rider. A smaller bike has an average weight of 150-200 grams less than that of the neighboring, larger size. A small frame bike is more manoeuvrable and easier to keep upright than a huge frame bike. On models with a large frame, you can get into the perfect position to develop maximum speed.

Structural parts of the frame

Choosing a bike depends on several factors. First, decide on the type of bike: mountain, road, hybrid or children. Having made a choice, we deal with the design and dimensions of the frame, which is measured in inches.

The geometry of the frame affects the behavior of the bike. The main elements that determine the reaction of the frame to external influences:

  • Top tube length (A) is the distance between the centers of the head tube and the seatpost. A long top tube gives "stability" and less agility to the bike.
  • Steering angle (M) - the angle between the steering column and a line parallel to the ground. A large angle (close to vertical) ensures the maneuverability of the bike.
  • Seat Angle (L) - The angle between the seat tube and a line parallel to the ground. At low angles (large tube tilt back) the rider's weight shifts back - providing traction, at more vertical angles - the rider's weight shifts forward, providing a better fit for power pedaling.
  • Wheelbase - the distance between the front and rear axles of the wheels. The increased base gives more stability and less maneuverability of the bike.
  • The length of the chainstays is the distance between the bottom bracket and the axle of the rear hub. Smaller chainstays provide better rear wheel traction and greater bike maneuverability. Usually the length of the chainstay is as short as possible to increase the rigidity and strength of the frame.
  • Carriage height (clearance, ground clearance) - the distance between the bicycle carriage and the soil surface. Increasing the gap - reduces the stability of the bike, but at the same time the patency increases and vice versa. Road bikes have lower bottom brackets than mountain bikes.
  • Stem length - the distance from the center of the steering column to the steering wheel; affects the maneuverability of the bike and the landing of the cyclist.

How to choose the right mountain and hybrid bike for height?

A popular frame measurement is the length of the top tube, but frame size is usually determined by the length of the seat tube. It is important to understand that the geometry of the frame is arbitrary and frames with the same length may have different sizes. To determine the desired frame length, rest your elbow on the "nose" of the saddle, and put your hand on the handlebar stem. Your fingers should rest on the handlebar cover.

The size of the frame depends on the person's height, shorter people need smaller frames. Frame size is measured in two ways:

  1. C-C, from the axle of the bottom bracket (pedals) to the center line of the top tube;
  2. C-T, from the bottom bracket axle to the top of the seat tube.

Traditionally, road bike frame sizes are measured in centimeters or millimeters, while hybrid and mountain bikes are measured in inches.

Mountain bike frame sizes

When choosing a bike for extreme disciplines (street, downhill, etc.), smaller frames are taken, which increases maneuverability when jumping and performing tricks.

Also, the base of the bike depends on the overall length of the frame and the angle of the head tube. Bicycle selection formula: D=d*0.56/2.54 D - frame size; d is the length of the legs; 0.56 - ratio of leg length to height; 2.54 - conversion of inches to cm

How to choose the right children's bike for height?

B’TWIN children’s bikes and balance bikes are subject to the following height limits:

Frame size, inch Height, cm
75-95
12” 95-101
101-115
115-128
126-155
When choosing a children's bike, you should consider the frame size and wheel diameter, as the wheels affect the handling and comfort of the children's bike. There is a recommendation for choosing bicycles for children with a “small margin”, since it is impossible to know in advance how much a child will grow during the season.

How to choose the right road bike for your height?

Features of road bikes are conducive to long trips on a flat road. Therefore, this issue should be approached more carefully and seriously.

Wheel diameter - as a factor influencing the choice of a bicycle

There is a statement: the larger the diameter of the wheels of a bicycle, the greater the speed the bicycle can develop. The larger the diameter, the greater the speed at an equal speed of rotation of the axis. That's just the effort to spin the wheel of a larger diameter, you need to make more. So trust but verify. The tread pattern and dimensions of the tire, the pressure in the chamber and the general setting of all mechanisms affect the speed much more noticeably.

Children's bike wheel diameter:

Age, years Height, cm Wheel size, inch
from 1.5 to 3 75-88
2 to 4 88-98 12
3 to 5 98-105

The article is updated from time to time, because. over the years, the market situation has changed.

Most people buy a bike for a quiet ride in the city and groomed dirt trails. In this case, it makes no sense to buy a very high-quality and expensive device, but you should not take the cheapest bike from the nearest shopping center either. A good mid-range bike can be bought at reputable specialist bike shops. Particularly delicious prices in some online stores, but there are some "pitfalls". If you want to save money, then it makes sense to take a used bike. Be careful with notice boards like Avito, they often sell stolen or half-dead bikes. And in no case do not get fooled by the "brand" bikes BMW, Hammer, Porsche, Land Rover, etc. in the price category 8.000-18.000 rubles. Despite their apparent appearance, they are terrible. On specialized bike forums, the chance of a successful purchase is much higher.

So, for starters, you have to decide on the size and frame material.

frame material.

If you are a novice cyclist, you should start your journey with a bike on an aluminum alloy frame. They are not expensive and at the same time strong, not heavy and resistant to corrosion.

In the table below, in a somewhat simplified form, all the advantages and disadvantages of frames made of various alloys are shown.

Rostov.

Rostovka is the distance from the center of the bottom bracket axle to the top of the seat tube. Most often measured in inches. The geometry of the bike, especially the length of the top tube, also depends on the size.

The following table lists the recommended settings for mountain, hybrid and city bikes. For different manufacturers, these values \u200b\u200bmay differ slightly. There are separate tables for road, road, folding, children's, trial and bmx bikes.

Frame rolling.

Sometimes, from experienced cyclists, you can hear "Yes, this frame rolls." Here we are talking about torsional rigidity (helps to transfer forces from the pedals to the wheels) and the ability to absorb vibrations. The balance is important, in which the frame is not too soft, so as not to deform too much from pedaling, and not too rigid, otherwise the frame will absorb vibrations worse when driving on small bumps (fine gravel, etc.).

We can immediately say that mountain bike frames in the price category up to about 70,000 rubles (for the entire bike) roll about the same. And above already begins the racing segment, in which the difference is more noticeable.

Types of suspensions and bicycles.

The type of suspension depends on how and where you ride.

  • A hardtail is a bicycle that does not have a rear shock absorber. The front can be soft or hard fork. Hardtails tend to be relatively light in weight, with high stiffness and responsiveness.
  • A rigidtail is a hardtail that has no front or rear shock absorbers, allowing it to make the most of pedaling effort on flat ground. Not suitable for off-road. Stunt rigs stand apart - BMX, trial bike and street bike.
  • Dual suspension is a bike that has two shock absorbers that allow you to feel confident on the road, but at the same time eat up pedaling efforts and add extra weight to the bike.

For urban conditions, it makes sense to take a hardtail, perhaps a rigid one. And here again you have to make a choice between several types of bicycles.

  • City bikes or city bikes are rigid bikes, often with a steel frame and usually with a single speed. Equipped with wings, chain guard and basket. Designed for leisurely driving on flat surfaces.
  • Mountain bikes, they are also MTB (Mountain bike) or ATB (All-terrain bicycle) - can be hardtails or two-suspension. Equipped with a gearshift mechanism, which allows you to pick up a fairly high speed and climb steep climbs. Used for driving both on asphalt and on the ground.
  • Extreme MTB hardtails are durable bikes for extreme riding. Low size allows you to shift the center of gravity back when performing jumps. They can have one or more speeds.
  • Road bikes are very light, fragile and fast rigid bikes with a set of gears, they do not have shock absorbers. These are essentially highly specialized sports equipment.
  • Fixes (Fixed Gear) - bicycles with one fixed gear, i.e. when the rear wheel is rotated, the pedals are always spinning. To reduce weight, they are often used without brakes. There are urban fixes, stunt and thoroughbred track bikes. Fixes are lightweight and low strength (with the exception of stunts).
  • Touring bikes are hardtails, often rigids, designed for travel. Equipped with a luggage carrier, on which you can attach a backpack, which relieves the load from the back. A planetary hub sometimes acts as a gearshift system, which allows you to protect the gearshift system from dust and dirt.

Full suspensions can also be very different - from light cross-country shells with short shock absorber strokes to heavy downhill monsters. In the city, two-suspension is inappropriate. Unless, of course, you intend to ride in the style of Urban Freeride, or the roads of your locality are not very different from off-road.

Wheels, tyres.

Now a few words about the wheels. The smallest bikes with wheels with a diameter of 20 inches or less are suitable. For older children and teenagers, 24-inch wheels are optimal. And adults need to focus on wheels with a diameter of 26 to 29 inches. Of course, there are exceptions, such as BMX or trial mods.

In no case should the rims be single, you will be exhausted to edit them. Dual rims are double walled and less prone to warping.

If you have enough money for bushings with industrial bearings, then this will not be a waste of money. The so-called "bulk" (bushes with bulk bearings) require regular maintenance, and the bushings on the "slip" (industrial bearings) are much less demanding to maintain, while their service life is much longer. Of course, there are exceptions and there are people who prefer expensive bushings with loose bearings. they have less rolling resistance and the quality of the metal is noticeably higher than the cheap "mound".

Tires according to the type of tread are divided into slick, semi-slick, mud and studded tires.

  • Slicks are smooth tires, the pattern is practically absent. Good when driving on smooth asphalt.
  • Mud tires - used primarily in mud or loose surfaces. Tread height 5mm or more.
  • Semi-slicks are a cross between slicks and mud tires. Tread height 2-4 mm.
  • Studded tires - have a fairly high sparse tread and metal spikes to prevent slipping on ice. There are also winter Velcro, of course, without spikes. Winter tires are made from a special compound that does not harden in the cold, which improves grip.

As a general rule, the softer the tire material, the better the grip, and the harder, the longer the life. But there are exceptions that combine all the advantages, such as Continental's Black Chili compound. If you are choosing your first bike, then do not put tires at the forefront, there are much more important parameters. You can change tires at any time.

switching systems.

Now you need to pay attention to the switching system. Shimano and Sram are the most common companies producing shifting systems for MTB today. Campagnolo stands a little apart - a company that produces components mainly for road bikes. Here is a quick comparison table of different groups of mountain bike equipment:

Shimano SRAM Quality
SIS, Tourney Low
Altus X3 Low
Acera X4 low-medium
Alivio X5 Average
Deore X7 medium-high
Deore LX X7, NX High
SLX X7, X9, GX High
Deore XT X9 very high
XTR X0, X1 very high
XX, XX1, X01, X1 Eagle Higher

Even if you are a novice cyclist, it is strongly not recommended to take equipment below Shimano Alivio / SRAM X.5, because. it will bring one disorder.

Some people think that the more speeds, the better the bike, but this is not so. And more often than not, it's the other way around. For many novice cyclists, 6-7 speeds will be enough. But the catch is that bikes with 6 and 7 stars in the back are usually of poor quality, they often bend and break the rear axles, they simply don’t produce proper equipment for them, although there are exceptions, these are very expensive downhill bikes. Many people are better off looking at models that have at least 8 stars on the back. Three stars in front are needed for those who intend to climb steep climbs and develop high speeds (50 km / h and more) on straight sections and descents. For most cyclists, there is no need for a front derailleur and three chainrings in front. If you have the most common transmission (the front middle sprocket is 32 teeth, the rear small sprocket is 11 teeth), then, with proper training, using these stars, you can reach speeds of up to 40 km / h on flat asphalt or rolled soil and about 50 km/h on a slight slope. In addition, inexpensive bikes with front derailleurs have many problems, such as bent chainrings, which significantly impair shifting. But finding an adult MTB bike with a single chainring in the front, a rear derailleur and a reasonable price has never been easy. Recently, however, similar bicycles have been found in Russian stores in the price category of about 40,000 rubles. If the budget is limited, then for many this will be a great option.

brakes

They are rim and disc. Also brakes are divided into mechanical and hydraulic.

  • Rim mechanical brakes are usually inexpensive, easy to maintain, but problems arise when a figure eight appears on a wheel. Braking control also leaves much to be desired. The exception is professional models for competitions.
  • Disc mechanical brakes are more expensive than rim brakes, but do not be afraid of eights. Braking control is average. However, they are quite easy to maintain. Great solution for a budget bike.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent control and stopping power. The disadvantages include the high price and difficulty in maintenance, especially cheap models.
  • Rim hydraulic brakes have all the benefits of hydraulic disc brakes but are lighter. Disadvantages - dependence on eights and high price.

Summary.

Summarizing all of the above, we can advise the following: if you choose a bike for pleasure riding in the city and on the ground, then focus on a hardtail, possibly a rigid one, on an aluminum frame, 26-29 inch wheels on semi-slicks, equipment of at least Shimano Alivio / SRAM level X5 and spring-oil or air-oil fork. Discard budget hydraulic brakes right away, disc mechanics from the same price segment will be more reliable. Try to choose a bike that meets most of the above requirements. Such a bike is unlikely to cost less than 50,000 rubles. If you can’t meet the budget by following the above tips, then you will have to sacrifice something. Focus on the following selection priorities (in descending order):

  • Fork, wheels and frame (except for frames in the budget segment).
  • Transmission.
  • Brakes.
  • Tires.
  • All the rest.

If you need a bike exclusively for the city, then maybe even a city bike with one speed is enough for you, in which case you will save money and there will be much less problems with tuning. But for hilly cities, such as Samara, this option is not very suitable.

If you are buying a bike for sports or active riding, then this article will obviously not be enough for you. Take your time, read a few more articles, read bike forums, and only then make an informed choice.

Buying a cheap bike, you inevitably doom yourself to frequent breakdowns in the future. It often happens that such bicycles are not repairable, or the cost of repair is 50-100% of the value of the bicycle. There is no point in a total upgrade of such bikes, in the long run it would be wiser to buy a bike at a higher level.

Cycling in our country has reached unprecedented levels. If ten years ago a cyclist was a fairly rare occurrence, now almost every fifth inhabitant of a large city has a two-wheeled vehicle. And if a person has not yet bought a bicycle, then he will definitely think about it. All this is explained by the availability of a bicycle - you do not need to save your entire salary for several months to purchase it.

If you also want to buy a bike soon, then we hasten to warn you about one problem. Initially, they all seem similar to each other. But in fact, there are several types and even subspecies of bicycles, not to mention different attachments. If you don't prepare for your choice of bike, you risk getting into trouble. A vehicle that is not suitable for your driving style will cause some inconvenience. Be sure - after a year you will want to sell the bike, and it will seem to you that your body is to blame for this, not adapted for such physical exertion. But in fact, you just chose the wrong bike for yourself. Therefore, we recommend that you read this text, which will tell you how different bikes differ from each other.

Bicycle type

Photo: static12.insales.ru

First of all, you need to decide on the type of bike. To do this, you should focus on the further method of using a two-wheeled vehicle. Surely you have heard that some people travel on bicycles, conquering distances of several thousand kilometers. Of course, for these purposes, a specialized model is required, which is distinguished by the presence of a trunk, high-quality attachments and a reliable design. Other people ride much less often, driving only a few tens of kilometers at a time. In this case, you should not spend extra money - an entry-level walking or mountain bike is quite suitable.

road bikes

These vehicles have a thin frame made of one material or another. In this regard, the bike receives a minimum mass, and this greatly simplifies acceleration - the rolling resistance is minimal. But it is not for nothing that such an "iron horse" is called a road one - a light frame may not withstand the loads when driving off asphalt. Yes, and a narrow range of gears is not conducive to off-road walks. A road bike is worth buying only for those people who are going to ride on asphalt, spending a minimum of time on the ground.

road bikes

These bikes are popularly called city bikes. They are distinguished by a planetary gearshift mechanism (and sometimes it is simply absent), chain protection and an average frame weight. They also get at their disposal the rear and front fenders that protect the cyclist from the consequences of riding through puddles. A straight landing is not conducive to aerodynamics, and therefore you can forget about high speeds. But it is very convenient for moving around the city for short distances. A basket clings to the steering column of such a bicycle; there may be a stable trunk above the rear wheel. In a word, a road bike is ideal for those people who are going to ride only in their city and do not think about any long journeys.

Courier bikes

Such bicycles are very difficult to find in Russian stores. They are characterized by minimal weight and a fixed gear. Most often they use a foot brake, as in children's bicycles. Usually, amateurs turn a road bike into a courier bike by removing all unnecessary sprockets, as well as performing other simple operations. Such vehicles are named after the American couriers who fell in love with them so much.

Touring bikes

In our country, such two-wheeled "horses" are also extremely rare. It just so happened that for cycling in our conditions it is easier to use a road or mountain bike. Although practice shows that a touring bike is noticeably more reliable, this is a kind of compromise between the two types of vehicles mentioned above. You can forget about the high speed when buying it, instead, you get a wide range of gears, high strength and room for luggage. This is ideal for those who want to go on a bike tour.

Track bikes

This type of vehicle will only be of interest to athletes. Such bicycles are used only on open and closed cycle tracks. Everything is done in it for better aerodynamics and fast acceleration. A side wind can simply blow it off the road. For the sake of lightening the track bike, he was spared brakes and other less necessary components. Also, such a vehicle has a fixed transmission and one gear ratio.

Children's bicycles

They can be completely different. For example, in stores you can find a children's bike Merida, which has a minimum number of differences from its mountain prototype (but the cost will be intimidating). Simplified versions similar to the famous "Schoolboy" are more popular. Most often, these bikes have a foot brake and a fixed gear. But there are exceptions, because the child needs to be accustomed to hand brakes as soon as possible - almost all adult bicycles are equipped with them. Variants for the smallest have attachments for two supporting wheels. They are needed if the child has not yet learned to keep balance. Finally, there are tricycles that are ridden by children under the age of 3 years.

bmx

A relatively recently invented type of bicycle. Differs in low arrangement of the rider and small weight. In fact, this vehicle is not designed to travel long distances. Most often, BMX is used to perform tricks on ramps, jumps and flat areas. Special lugs on the front hub allow you to ride even on the front wheel. The purchase of such a bike is recommended for extreme people who have little skateboard, roller skates and snowboard.

Mountain bikes

The most popular type of bicycle in our country. There are several types of such vehicles. Two-suspension stands out the most. If a regular mountain bike has only one shock absorber (built into the front fork), then dual suspensions are additionally endowed with a special spring located somewhere under the rider. This allows you to ride over areas so uneven that they would intimidate any other cyclist. Not every mountain bike supports rack mounting. Also, all of them are initially equipped with tires with a high tread, they help to drive even on sand. However, such tires do not contribute to gaining speed on asphalt, which is why most often a semi-slick is purchased to replace them. A mountain bike has a wide frame, which means it cannot weigh very little. All this suggests that such a vehicle should be of interest only to a person who does not want to make multi-day trips.

Ligerad

This is the name of a recumbent bicycle, the least popular among the people. It puts the least load on the back of the cyclist, since he is in a supine position. However, this has a very strong effect on overcoming climbs - a person does not have the opportunity to stand on the pedals with all his weight. In this regard, the ligerade is only suitable for driving on flat areas with an asphalt surface. Most of all, such bicycles are common in Europe, where they are used by tourists.

Wheel size

Photo: cs319823.vk.me

When you have decided on the type of bike - it's time to pay attention to the size of the wheels. It can vary from 12 to 29 inches. Small wheels are usually installed on children's bikes - otherwise the child simply could not get to the saddle. Medium wheels are equipped with road bikes used to move around the city. City and road bikes usually get wheels that range in size from 26 to 29 inches, although there are exceptions.

If the vehicle is equipped with 29-inch wheels, then they will cover a greater distance in fewer revolutions. They will also literally swallow small obstacles, loading the suspension fork and your hands less. However, the weight of such wheels along with tires will be more. In this regard, it is difficult to overcome climbs - in many cases you will have to dismount to do this. If you know that you will have to ride not only on the plain, then it is better to limit yourself to 26-inch wheels. Also, this option is ideal for constant movement around the city - large wheels allow you to accelerate to high speeds, and in urban conditions this is simply not necessary.

Frame size (size)

The comfort of the ride depends primarily on the size of the frame. If you buy a bike that is too big, you simply won't be able to sit on it. It is necessary to select a two-wheeled "horse" in such a way that there is at least 5-7 cm from the seat tube to your groin. In this case, you must stand on the ground, and not on the pedals.

There are several frame sizes. You can see them in the table below.

The following table shows which road or road bike frame is ideal for a person with a particular height. However, it should be remembered that all this is only in theory. Two people of the same height can have legs of different lengths. Also, do not forget that with different wheels the same frame will be of different heights. In this regard, it is not recommended to order and buy a bike on the Internet - it may be too big for you. It is better to go to the nearest store and try out the bike there.

Attachment

Photo: velostrike.ru

Attachments most commonly refer to brakes and shifters. You can easily change them at any time. Attachments can be completely deprived of children's bicycles - they slow down with the help of their feet, and gear shifting is not necessary at all. The more expensive the equipment, the better it works and the less it weighs. It also affects reliability - high-quality brakes and switches can function stably for many tens of thousands of kilometers.

brakes

V-brakes are still very popular today. This is the name of the pads that clamp the rim of the wheel together. The main advantages of such brakes are the minimum weight and low price. That is why only they are used by cyclists-athletes who cover several hundred kilometers on asphalt every day. Unfortunately, the pads wear out quickly, and therefore they need to be changed regularly. In one season with active driving, you can change a couple of pads. Also, such brakes can become useless if the wheel gets an "eight".

More reliable are disc brakes. Usually their work is not affected by the appearance of the "eight", nor by rain, nor by mud. Disc brakes can last for many years. But it must be remembered that they can not be installed on every bike - they require special holes in the frame. Usually their installation is not possible on bicycles, the cost of which is less than 15 thousand rubles.

Switches

Bicycles have front and rear derailleurs. The number of gears depends on the number of sprockets installed on your bike. The front derailleur is the least whimsical to use. If you set it up correctly, it can serve for years without fear of dirt and rain. If problems begin - just wash off the accumulated dirt. Yes, and the front derailleur works without any problems, even if it belongs to the amateur class.

But the same cannot be said about the rear derailleur. His metal rooster is the weakest spot. This part regularly moves towards the spokes and back. It is easy to damage it, and if the switch is set incorrectly, the rooster can get into the knitting needles, which will lead to the most unpredictable consequences. After buying a bike, it is recommended to stop by the bike shop and ask to adjust the derailleur - this way you will save yourself time and nerves. It is recommended to configure this element yourself only with the advent of experience.

The stable operation of the switches helps you climb hills with less effort, as well as develop tremendous speed on flat surfaces. Cheap derailleurs move the chain from one sprocket to another with some effort and delay. Switches of the initial sports or tourist group work noticeably more adequately, but their cost is slightly higher.

Shifters

The cyclist brakes and shifts gears with the help of shifters - special mechanical devices located on both handlebars. Their design may vary depending on the cost. On the cheapest shifters, gear shifting is done by turning the wheel. This is inconvenient, as it requires you to remove one of your hands from the steering wheel.

Higher quality shifters allow you to switch the speed by clicking one of the two levers. The current gear is always indicated on the shifter. The brake is activated using a large lever - usually only two fingers are enough for this.

Cables

When you press the brake lever or shift gears, the corresponding element of the bike is set in motion with a cable. The longer it is, the sooner problems are identified. That is why the rear derailleur needs to be adjusted regularly, giving it less and less cable length (it tends to stretch). This is done using a small wheel on the switch itself or on the lever. It is also necessary to always keep the "shirt" clean - a braid, inside of which there is a metal cable.

In more expensive bikes, the brakes can be hydraulically operated. In this case, the cables are replaced with tubes with a special liquid. Hydraulic brakes are needed if you regularly ride on mountain slopes. The cables gradually stretch, which is why the brakes work less and less. And nothing will happen to the liquid for a long time. Full pressure on the brake lever in this case tightly stops the wheel. Hydraulics are a little more difficult to maintain - when changing a wheel or tire, special clamps will be required, thanks to which fluid does not flow out of the tube.

Depreciation

Photo: www.velosklad.ru

When choosing a bike, be sure to pay attention to the suspension. Cheap and children's models are completely devoid of it. Such bicycles can ride on dirt and asphalt with potholes, but a person will have to feel all the bumps. If you drive on such a surface for a long time, your hands may get sick. A few years of regular travel can lead to not the most pleasant diseases. A bike without shock absorbers is called a rigid bike and is only recommended if you need to be austere.

Hardtails are much more popular. Most mountain bikes belong to them - the absence of a front shock absorber would make riding on rocky and unpaved surfaces especially unpleasant. Suspension fork can be made using different technologies. The cheapest is a fork with a twisted metal spring. Its main drawback is a decent mass. Also, such a fork may contain oil, thanks to which the depreciation works stably for several seasons in a row.

Air forks are much more expensive. Their work is best manifested at the end of the course, which allows you to overcome large obstacles with great comfort. But most of all, such forks are loved for their low weight - they are at least 150 g lighter than spring counterparts.

You should also pay attention to the way the suspension fork is adjusted. In cheap bikes, it may not be adjusted at all. But more often than not, the fork can still be adjusted to your weight, as well as blocking its work (this is necessary on an asphalt road so that all efforts go into pedaling).

Also, two-suspension is now gaining great popularity. Such bicycles are supplemented with a rear shock absorber, thanks to which the fifth point of the cyclist practically does not notice potholes and other obstacles on the road. If you are going to ride only on rough terrain, a full-suspension should be your choice. But at the same time, it is recommended to look towards more expensive bicycles, because only in them the rear shock absorber works most adequately.

frame material

Photo: alkatrion.com

The bicycle frame can be made of alloy steel or aluminum alloy. Steel is most often used in the manufacture of road bikes. This material has a large mass, and therefore the frame is trying to make it as thin as possible. The main advantage of steel is its excellent resistance to stress. The efforts of the cyclist can slightly bend the metal - it will definitely straighten back. It is possible to break such a frame only when falling from a great height or under the wheels of a car.

Aluminum alloy with various additives is lighter. Also, such material is not afraid of moisture - the frame does not need to be wiped after rain, fearing the appearance of corrosion. But aluminum is not famous for its reliability. It's hard to bend it. But if you do this, you will not be able to straighten the frame tube back. In most cases, an aluminum alloy frame does not bend, but simply breaks. And if steel is easily cooked in any auto repair shop, then such a trick will not work with aluminum. That is why mountain bikes have such a thick frame. This does not allow it to break even under significant load, while the weight remains quite sane.

Gradually, carbon fiber frames are coming into use. However, carbon fiber is still a very expensive material, so bikes made from it cost a lot of money. Quality carbon is hard to break. But if this happens - get ready to purchase a new frame, such a breakdown cannot be repaired. The main advantage of carbon is that it weighs almost nothing. A frame created from it can have a mass of 1-2 kg.

There are also bicycle frames assembled from titanium. However, working with such material is technologically difficult, which is why large companies do not practice this business. If a cyclist desperately needs such a frame, then the only option is to place an order with one or another factory that works with titanium. A distinctive feature of this material is low weight (more than carbon fiber, but less than aluminum), corrosion resistance and high strength.

Most assembly is done by hand.

Good day, dear readers!

Today I want to talk about bicycles: tell you how they differ and how to choose the right bike. After all, business does not stand still, and just give free rein to “honest” sellers, and in most cases a person will be sold not what he needs, but what is left, or what is beneficial to them.

In this article, I will not delve into all the technical details of the characteristics of modern bicycles, but I will try to give direction in the selection of a bicycle, and there, God willing, all other knowledge will come to you as the bicycle is used.

So, what should you pay attention to when choosing a bike, and not make a mistake?

Bicycle selection

To choose a bike, you need to immediately determine for whom it will be intended: men, women or children.

It may sound strange or trite, but the comfort of using your bike depends on it.

Basically the difference between them is as follows:

men's bikes have a standard frame design: high, like a bicycle "Ukraine" or "Salute", if anyone remembers. 🙂

women's bikes built on a lowered frame: to climb on it, you do not need to throw your leg.

Children's bicycles differ mainly in the size of the frame, which can be of various designs (see "Frames" later in the article), as well as the size of the wheels, which are less than 26 inches in diameter.

unisex- bicycles that have a frame that is not too high and not too low, which is suitable for both men and women.

Bicycle types

When we go to a bike shop or an online bike shop, in the category “Bicycles” or on the price tag, we can see the following items that correspond to the conditions of use of the bike, or the style of riding.

At the moment there are the following types of bicycles:

Mountain bikes are designed for off-road riding. The main characteristics are:
- wide and durable embossed wheels (for good off-road grip) - reinforced rims and tires with treads;
- depreciation of the wheels, both the front (suspension fork), and two at the same time;
- reinforced trapezoidal frame;
- speed switches.

Niners are mountain bikes with larger wheels (29 inches - 622 mm) than standard mountain bike wheels (26 inches - 559 mm). In addition, frames for such wheels are usually longer. The main advantage of the niner is the fast movement over rough terrain, as well as the comfort when riding people with an above-average height. Sometimes bicycles are also called niners based on 28-inch wheels.

This type of bike can usually be recognized by the presence of a rack, foot brakes, lack of shock absorbers on the wheels and gear shifting. A typical representative from the past is Salyut, Orlyonok, Ukraine, Aist, etc. Citybikes are not designed for off-road riding, except perhaps along a flat path on the field.

This type of bicycle is designed for high-speed riding on a purely flat surface: asphalt or even and hard ground. The main characteristics of the road bikes are: light weight, thin wheels, 28 inches in diameter, rigid frame construction. There are other subtleties, but in the aggregate, such a bike is built in such a way that the bike rides at maximum speed, while even the location of the cyclist is taken into account in terms of aerodynamics.

This type of bicycle is derived from road and mountain bikes. Designed for riding, both on flat roads and off-road. Hybrids have thicker tires than highways, a suspension fork on the front wheel, gear shifters, and the ability to install a trunk. Hybrid bikes are easier to cover long distances than mountain bikes, but at the same time they ride more comfortably off-road than road bikes.

This type of bicycle is intended for riding exclusively on cycle tracks. In appearance, they are very similar to road bikes, but still differ in the following characteristics:
- thinner wheels, 622 or 700 mm in diameter;
- only 1 gear is installed on the tracker;
- the carriage assembly is higher, due to which the distance between the lowest position of the pedal and the track surface is increased;
- shorter wheelbase
- traditional brakes are virtually absent, and braking occurs by blocking the pedals or a gradual slowdown;
- low weight of the bike.

This type of bike is unmistakable. Its purpose is BMX competitions. Distinctive features are:
— low frame;
— small wheels;
- Only 1 gear.

There are also lesser known types of bicycles, but this will not be discussed today.

Now, if you have decided, dear readers, with the type of bike you need, let's look at what they are equipped with, and first, let's decide on the frame, because. it is the foundation of the whole bike.

Personally, my choice is Niner. Under my height of 195 cm, that's it 🙂 . The choice for the wife is a regular mountain bike, because. Niner is tall for her height.

bicycle frame

The frame type continues to resolve the issue with the further operation of the bike, because. it depends on it in what conditions it will be most comfortable to ride it.

frame type. Suspension

Rigid suspension bikes do not have shock absorbers and are also cheaper to manufacture. The main disadvantage is a very hard (uncomfortable) ride over rough terrain - even light off-road.

Hardtail- the most common type of bicycle frame. The main difference between Hardtail bicycles is the ability to install front wheel suspension, due to the installation of a suspension fork, but at the same time, the absence of rear wheel suspension. This type of frame is used mainly in mountain, touring and hybrid bikes.

Double suspension. Bicycles on this type of suspension have shock absorption on both the front and rear wheels. The plus is complete comfort when traveling off-road, and the minus is the weight limit. For example, with a weight of 120-130 kg, the bike is unlikely to last long, especially if you ride it often. In addition, it will cost more to repair a full-suspension suspension than a rigid or hardtail. And yet, in addition, on a flat surface, bicycles on the first two types of frames will ride faster than full-suspension, unless, of course, other technical equipment is the same.

My choice is a hardtail, and you, dear readers, see what you like best.

What material is the frame made of?

The frames of modern bicycles are made from the following materials:

Steel. The most common is chromium-molybdenum steel (CrMo 4130 or 30XMA).

Advantages: reliability and strength, durability, elasticity, cheapness in manufacturing, ease of repair.
Disadvantages: weight and susceptibility to corrosion.

Aluminium alloy. In fact, aluminum alloy has replaced steel frames, although steel is still used with great success to make bicycles cheaper. Most bikes in the middle and above the average price range are built on aluminum frames. The main brands of aluminum alloys are 7075, 7005, 6061.

Advantages: lighter weight, good anti-corrosion properties, easy to manufacture.
Disadvantages: unlike steel frames, aluminum ones have a shorter service life.

Titanium. Titanium alloy is used in more expensive frames.

Advantages: elasticity, reliability of the frame (2 times more reliable than steel and 3 times more reliable than aluminum frames), corrosion resistance, low weight (on average - 1.4 kg).
Cons: price

CFRP (Carbon). This type of frame is mainly installed on expensive bikes such as road bikes, track bikes, road bikes, hybrids. They are very light and expensive, and also afraid of point strikes.

Advantages: lightness, design.
Disadvantages: fragility, price.

Personally, I prefer a bike with aluminum or titanium frames. Everything depends on the budget.

Frame size: How to choose a bike for height?

The choice of bicycle frame size must be taken very seriously, because. further comfort when riding depends on this. After all, if you choose the right bike for your height, it will be much easier to ride it, and your legs will get tired much less.

Some brands of bikes have their own size charts, but I offer you the average values that most manufacturers adhere to.

Fork

Fork- an element of the front of the bicycle, designed to turn, to which the front wheel is attached.

The fork happens:

tough: Fits on road, track, road, BMX and cheap mountain bikes this provides better performance when driving on a flat surface;

soft (cushion): Mounted on mountain bikes or hybrid bikes for cushioning when riding off-road. Thus, the cyclist does not count all the holes that he hit with the front wheel, and there is practically no tension on the hands. For bicycle depreciation, see "Depreciation"

In addition, it depends on the fork what type of brake the bike will have: V-Brake or disc. Some forks are made universal, and you can install one type of bicycle front wheel brake or another on them.

wheels

I already partially wrote about the wheels, above, when I talked about the types of bicycles, in particular, mountain bikes and niners.

Wheel size

The main dimensions of the wheels of modern bicycles:

For adults: 29", 28", 27,5", 27", 26".
For teenagers: 24".
Children's bicycles: 20", 18", 16", 14", 12".
BMX bikes: 20".

Bicycle cushioning

Depreciation of bicycles can be only the front wheel or two together. Older bikes may not have any cushioning at all, like my Ardis (2005).

Front wheel damping

The front wheel smooths out bumps in the road due to the fork on which it is installed.

According to the principle of depreciation (mechanism), forks are divided into:

Steel spring. Compressed springs are installed inside the fork.

Elastomer. Inside the fork is a spring in which a rubber rod is installed. Its compression and unclenching and produces amortization of the wheel.

Oil. A special oil device is installed inside the fork, which regulates the rate of compression / decompression of the fork.

Air. A special sealed container with a piston filled with gas is installed inside the fork. When the fork compresses, the piston descends to a certain level, after which the compressed gas, when released, pushes it back, and the fork aligns. The principle is similar to the experiment with a conventional pump, if someone did it: the handle is pulled at the pump, the nipple is closed with a finger, and you try to close the handle to its original position, while it is impossible to do this completely, unless of course the nipple is closed tightly, but if the handle is released after compression , she quickly pulls back.

Bicycles of the middle and expensive segment are equipped with forks with air and oil shock absorbers.

There are also fork suspension hybrids: spring-oil, air-oil, etc., but that's another story.

Fork travel

Suspension forks have travel. The higher it is, the more comfortable you can drive on serious off-road.

As a rule, the suspension travel of the fork is 80-200 mm. Moreover, the difference in price for this value may differ several times.

Rear wheel damping

Depreciation of the rear wheel occurs due to the suspension of the frame. I have already said about this, that there are two-suspension bicycles, which are designed for depreciation. See frame type.

bicycle brakes

Bicycle brakes are divided into:

- rim;
- disk (Disc)
- drums;
- pedal;
- roller;
- stirrups.

Modern bicycles mostly have rim and disc brakes.

Rim brakes

Rim brakes work by clamping the rim of the wheel on both sides of the brake pads, thereby slowing the rotation of the wheel. The action on the brake pads is transmitted using a cable, which is extended to the brake lever located on the steering wheel.

The most popular rim brake system is called the V-Brake. This type of rim brake is derived from the V-mount of the levers with the brake pads.

Benefits of V-Brake:

- light weight;
- ease of setting;
- they heat up less, because the friction area is high on the rim;
- price;

Disadvantages of V-Brakes:

— pads require relatively frequent replacement;
- gradual rubbing of the rim, which eventually leads to the need to change it;
- if the rim is wet or in the mud, the efficiency of the brakes is reduced;
- if the wheel has eights, then it will always rub against the brake pads, thereby constantly slowing down the bike;
- vibrakes are attached to the frame in such a way that if they are sharply braked at high speed, they give a good load on the frame, which leads to the spreading of its feathers. To prevent this, a special arc is placed on the feathers.

Disc brakes

Disc brakes consist of a steel disc (rotor) mounted on the hub of a bicycle wheel and a brake device that clamps it when braking, with built-in brake pads (caliper). The action is transmitted, as with vibrakes, with the help of a cable stretched to the brake handle on the steering wheel.

Benefits of disc brakes:

- the level of pollution is lower, because the disk is in the center of the wheel, unlike vibraks;
- "eights" do not affect the efficiency of wheel rotation;
- the rim does not wear out;
- do not require such frequent maintenance as vibration breaks;

Disadvantages of disc brakes:

- price, both when buying and when servicing, especially hydraulic brakes;
- high load on the bushings and spokes, which, if the brake system is incorrectly adjusted and used, leads to their deformation and breakage;
- the weight;
- in some cases it is not possible to install a trunk;
- efficiency drops if oil accidentally gets on the disc;
- some "masters" install cheap disc brakes that work very poorly, and their adjustment and operation in the future will only pump money out of their pockets;
- some frames or forks have disc brake mounts so that sometimes they can just - fall off and, at best, fall, so be careful.

Mechanical and hydraulic brakes

Both rim (V-Brake) and disc (Disc) brakes are also available mechanical or hydraulic.

Mechanical brakes work with a steel cable that actuates the brake system by pressing the brake lever.

Hydraulic brakes, on the other hand, work due to the brake fluid, which is also supplied to the brake system from the brake lever. Hydraulic brakes are more expensive, but they have better stopping power than mechanical brakes, but they are also more expensive to maintain.

Of the disadvantages of hydraulics - a bicycle breakage or a fall if used incorrectly. For example, at high speed, with a large weight of the cyclist, if you brake sharply, then some parts of the bicycle wheels may be deformed, even some parts of the frame may break, or you may fall off the bicycle.

Bicycle technical equipment (attachment)

The technical equipment of a bicycle (sprockets, gear shifters, shifters, brakes, bushings, carriages, chains, etc.), which are also called attachments, is an important factor for comfortable cycling. After all, the reliability of the bike as a whole, the quality of braking, and the quality of gear shifting, and in some comparison, the presence of them in general, depend on this. I don’t know about you, dear readers, but I still have a Chinese bike that I bought for fishing back in 2005 for 450 UAH. The presence of brakes on it, and gear shifting, is a questionable question, although physically they are. 🙂 I’m already silent, how my childhood friend got on the same bike, because. his rear brake derailleur fell off while driving. In another case, the steering wheel cracked. It's good that his father is a good welder: he welded everything in such a way that he has 1 gear and brakes. Everything else has been thrown away. Why am I, oh yes, so that you do not suffer such situations, turn your attention to the manufacturer of attachments.

The most popular manufacturer of attachments for bicycles today is Shimano. This company has declared itself as a reliable manufacturer, not only in cycling, but also in other areas of human life, such as fishing. But there are nuances here too. Of course, there are other manufacturers of attachments, but they are usually quite rare, unless of course they are cheap consumer goods, so I will focus on Shimano today.

For affordability, Shimano produces components for bicycles of various levels, which differ, first of all, in their purpose: type of bicycle, frame type, riding style, etc.

With the efficiency of Shimano parts, everything is fine, and in terms of reliability, they do not raise additional questions, unless of course they are used correctly. 😉

Consider modern Shimano mountain bike equipment groups.

SHIMANO mountain bike equipment

Shimano Tourney- the most initial level of attachments for bicycles. The quality is not great, and it is not recommended to install this type of attachment on bicycles for off-road riding. Shimano Tourney is designed primarily for 21 speed bikes. Shimano Tourney shifters are available in 2 types: grip-shift (Shimano RevoShift) or double lever.

Shimano Altus- a representative of entry-level attachments, but it can already be put on mountain bikes, unless of course you ride them carefully and on light off-road. It is installed on bicycles with 21 - 24 gears. The shifters are easier to control than the Shimano Tourney. The speed switches are also presented in the video of a rotary knob or two levers.

Shimano Acera- also a representative of entry-level attachments. Designed for bikes with 24 gears. Gear shifters (shifters) - grip-shift (Shimano RevoShift) and double lever.

Shimano Alivio- Inexpensive, but a fairly high-quality group of equipment. Specifications are similar to the higher class - Shimano Deore, but at the same time the price is lower. Double-lever shifters - RapidFire Plus. Brakes - rim. The bushings already have some dirt protection, albeit entry-level ones. Used on bikes with 24 gears.

Shimano Deore- the middle class Shimano, which replaced the STX and STX-RC groups. Entry level equipment for 27 speed bikes, although many use it on 24 speed bikes. Some manufacturers combine Shimano Deore rear derailleurs with shifters from cheaper Shimano groupsets. Shimano Deore components weigh more than its smaller brothers due to the use of more expensive materials. The brake system is presented as both rim and disc brakes. Some parts cost close to the highest Shimano groups. Components are presented in various modifications, which makes it possible to assemble almost any configuration of the bike.

Shimano SLX and LX- high quality, but still relatively affordable attachments designed for bicycles with 27 gears. Shifters switch much easier, which is due to the plain bearings installed in them. The group includes bushings with a "roller" freewheel mechanism. Cassettes are made mainly from steel alloys. Entry level brakes with parallel pressure cartridge pads.

Since 2009, Shimano LX has been used in touring bikes, and for mountain bikes a new equipment group is introduced - Shimano SLX

Shimano XT- a professional group of bicycle components, presented in almost any modification. The bushings, like the shifters, are on bearings. The brakes are rim and disc, both mechanical and hydraulic. Hollow splined connecting rods Installed on bicycles with 27 gears.

Shimano XTR- the highest level of professional equipment for bicycles with 27 gears. The weight is reduced, in comparison with the equipment of the previous classes, due to the use of titanium alloys, while the reliability and durability are increased. Some parts, however, have more weight, but this is due to more complex component designs. The price is the highest. Shifters, bushings on ball bearings. A new type of shifters is also presented - Dual Control, the feature of which is gear shifting and control of the brake system with one lever.

The bearings used in bottom brackets and bushings are made of stainless steel, protected by a double seal and are not afraid of any water with mud.

An additional rear derailleur control, the Rapidfire remote lever, can be installed on the “horns” of the bike.

Since 2013, a new gear control mechanism has appeared - electronic - Shimano Di2.

According to reviews, Shimano equipment groups above Deore work incomparably more efficiently, although a lot depends on the bike tuner, because. if a professional does it, then the Deore system will work like a Swiss watch.

To be frank, most people don't need to make multi-hundred dollar investments in high end equipment. for the needs of the majority it is not justified, for example, if you ride several times a year, or ride around the house, but if you aim at the Olympus of cycling competitions, then you will definitely notice the difference. Therefore, on most entry-level and mid-level bikes, Shimano Tourney, Altus, Acera, Alivio, Deore attachments are mainly installed.

Number of speeds

The number of speeds (gears) determines the comfort when cycling under different conditions, for example, it is easiest to climb up in minimum gears, while on a straight road it is better to ride in maximum or medium gears, etc.

The more gears, the more expensive the bike, not only when buying, but also when servicing.

Basically, bikes are sold at 21, 24 and 27 speeds.

Bicycle brand (Brand)

The brand of a bicycle in cycling has not just a marketing basis, as in many areas of our life, although here the consciousness of the future bike rider is sometimes manipulated, nevertheless, a lot really depends on the brand, because. riding comfort and the reliability of the bike itself depend on this.

The most popular bikes on the market: Author, Bergamont, Bulls, Cannondale, Comanche, Cube, Felt, Fugi, Giant, Ghost, Kellys, Kona, Merida, Scott, Stevens, Trek.

Bicycle accessories

There are an incredible amount of accessories for the bike, some of which are designed to realize design fantasies, others for comfort, and the third expand the standard capabilities. So, what can we additionally install on the bike?

For night trips, you can install a bicycle headlight, rear light. In addition, LEDs can be installed as caps on the nipple of the wheels so that your wheels glow with neon light.

Just today I read the news that Volvo has released a special spray that can be sprayed on the frame or other components of the bike, and it will glow with white light.

If you are a fan of measuring everything, then you can install a bike computer on your bike that will calculate: how much you have traveled, what is the maximum speed, how long have you been on the road and other indicators.

For long trips, you can install a rack or basket on the bike, in which it will be convenient to place the burden, thereby freeing your shoulders from additional load.

Some bikes can be equipped with a bottle cage, which is also convenient for transporting water.

There are also special saddlebags or underframe bags for oversized luggage.

For long trips, it will be great to get cycling gloves.

If necessary, you can install footrests and fenders on the bike.

If you plan to leave the bike unattended near the store, be sure to get a bike lock, because. the theft of bicycles today, unfortunately, is put on the assembly line, although these people will pay sevenfold in due time, as the Holy Scripture writes (Proverbs 6:31).

Of course, no one has yet canceled the bells and mirrors, which can also be installed on a bicycle.

If you do not like the color of the bike, you can repaint it, for which special paints are sold.

Handlebar grips (grips) and saddles can also be changed to those that you like best.

Bicycle prices

Prices for bicycles today (spring 2015), due to the exchange rate, are unfortunately much higher than they were a couple of years ago, at least in Ukraine, and as far as I noticed, in Russia.

Thus, an entry-level mountain bike can be bought for about 4000 - 6000 UAH (Ardis, Azimut, Totem, Longway, etc.)

Bicycles of the middle level 8 000 – 14 000 UAH.

Bicycles of a high, but not professional level can be purchased for about 22,000 - 35,000 UAH.

Another point is touching: some “wise” guys bought bicycles earlier, for example, 5 years ago for 3200 UAH (at that time at the exchange rate - 400 USD) and now they are sold for 400 USD. (10,000 UAH) and they say that they bought them for exactly 400 USD, while wear and tear is no longer taken into account. But this is someone whose conscience works.

Personal advice: If you're on a budget, you can find a bike from a good manufacturer on bulletin boards or bike forums at the price of a new cheap Chinese brand. It is better to take the first option, because. the difference between them is significantly large, both in terms of driving comfort and in the reliability of all components.

For example, in order for my wife to go fishing with me, we found a Trek 3700 in good condition for relatively little money 4000 UAH.

That's all for today. If you have additions or clarifications on the topic, write, I will be happy to talk on the topic and on the forum.

I wish you to buy the best bike at the best price!

Everything in the world is cyclical: ebb and flow, fashion trends. Phenomena and things, replacing each other in an endless cycle, leave in order to return again one day. The fashion for vehicles is no exception. Today, the bicycle is becoming wildly popular again.

When I was about eight or ten years old, everyone around (as it seemed to me) pedaled. The boys in the yard, the participants of the Tour de France, who flashed in the news releases on the Rubin TV, the lean pensioners on the Tourists - in a word, everyone who, as they say, was not lazy, rode on two wheels.

Ask anyone in their thirties or early thirties today what bikes were in our childhood days, and I'm pretty sure the answer won't be long in coming. I think you will hear painfully familiar names: “Kama”, “Cross”, “Schoolboy”, “Salute”, “Vela”, “Sura”, “Ural” and, in fact, “Tourist" - the legendary road bike of that era. Tell me, did I miss anything?

As you can see, the problem of choice was not particularly acute: what was in the windows of city stores was bought. The trouble has always been with availability.

What about today? Without hesitation, you can visit the mall closest to you, from the doors of which you will leave already on horseback. I hasten to warn my readers before trouble happens: this is the cheapest way, which is resorted to only by guest workers with the aim of saving all the same.

Personally, I have witnessed at least two cases when the Auchan-bike literally fell apart in half under its careless owner, unable to withstand the simplest trip over rough terrain.

So, if you don't want to fall prey to your own miserly indiscretions, head to a specialized sports store. We know for sure that popular outdoor reseller chains are present in most major cities in Russia, so do not hesitate for a second and go straight there.

Our great compatriot poet seemed to have foreseen the problem that today can be encountered when buying a “steel horse”. Despite the wide range of models and types of this vehicle, presented in sports shops, the problem of choice still occupies the top line of the hit parade: it is not easy to find “freedom and peace” in all this diversity.

If everything is more or less clear with dealers, then with the modifications and degrees of complexity of the two-wheeled vehicles offered at retail, things are worse: the choice is huge, it is not clear what to start from when making a decision. When, thinking about buying myself a bike instead of a car, a year ago I found myself among the rows of bikes smelling of machine oil, I was confused and, as a result, left empty-handed.

At that time, the problem was solved somehow by itself: the next day, when I went to visit one of my friends, I saw a shining country man, with whom I fell in love at first sight. And I ordered myself exactly the same on the same day (as it turned out, I still lost, and you will soon find out why).

The stingy pays twice, the stupid pays thrice

If your plans include more than sighing over the coveted equipment in the showroom, then let's find out about the main points that you have to consider in order not to make annoying mistakes, albeit at a relatively bargain price.

Speaking of types. Bicycles are conditionally divided into four categories:

  • . The two main varieties of this group are bikes with one (hardtail) and two (double suspension) shock absorbers, which allows the rider to move off-road with relative comfort.
  • Road. This is a bike for a quiet ride around the city. Suitable, for example, to drive to your favorite bakery for croissants or show off on the embankment on a sunny summer day. For showing off, by the way, the best purchase option would be a cruiser (aka chopper), which got its name because of its resemblance to a biker motorcycle.
  • Highway(here, in principle, one can also include track bikes designed for riding on special tracks - cycle tracks). These bikes do not have shock absorbers, which allows you to unload the muscles of the rider's hands and gain a fairly high speed on a flat road. Perhaps this is one of the best options for moving in a big city, where traffic takes place on asphalt.
  • Hybrid. They are also called touring bikes. The design of such a bike is a cross between mountain and road options. As a rule, a hybrid has a considerable number of speeds, combining the ability to roll forward in a straight line and the ability to comfortably move over rough terrain.

2. Estimate the budget you are counting on. It is important to understand that a bicycle of the initial price category can bring the owner no less joy than a device comparable in cost to a motorcycle.

If your goal is to unwind after a busy day, and not conquer the jumps on a forest track, then a bike for the discipline of cross-country is most likely to suit you. Popularly, it is called "hardtail" (from the English hard - "hard" and tail - "back", literally - "tail"), or "countryman".

3. Choose a store. This is important, as some specialize in a particular type of bike, offering additional services to their customers, such as repairs, tuning knots, and so on.

4. Decide on the number of speeds. As a rule, in order to fervently roll downhill or uphill in urban conditions, 20-27 speeds are more than enough for you - just the amount that is available on the average hardtail. By the way, due to the possibility of fixing the front shock absorber fork, this type of bike is perfect for urban residents: it will be equally fun to drive both in the city and beyond.

5. Choose your frame size. Any specialized store will help you with this, but just in case I inform you: if your height is less than 180 cm - your size is M. If about 180 cm, then L (my height is 179 cm, frame L). And if 190 cm and above, then XL, respectively.

6. Look for opportunities to test drive. In general, this is fundamental. You can shovel a whole mountain of any special literature and not climb out of online communities and forums dedicated to a particular cycling discipline. But the best option, although somewhat overhead, is to ride each bike to understand how it feels to ride. The owner of one particular type will almost certainly incline you towards his own preference, which in our situation is unacceptable.

I will give a personal example, which I briefly talked about at the beginning of the article. Let me remind you: a year ago, I was fascinated by the look of the countryman seen in one of my comrades. The bike turned out to be really good, with powerful hydraulic brakes, average "premium" components and a nice color.

Having skated on it for almost three months and plucking up courage and some skill, I began to actively jump from the curbs and call on small jumps that come across in the city on my way. Gradually, my bike began to break down, which led to repeated minor repairs, as well as the replacement of several components that had become unusable. After sharing my sadness with a bike shop employee, I realized that I made the wrong choice a year ago.

With that said, I urge our readers to learn from the mistakes of others and start from the end: don't be too lazy to take a walk to the bike shop and chat with sales assistants. Most likely, you will not be denied a test drive: these days this is an absolutely normal practice.

Go in for sports, pedal and remember: safety is above all!
